Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Greenville, SC - The Augusta GreenJackets were shutout for the 13th time in 2011, limited to just three hits in a 3-0 setback to the Greenville Drive on Friday night.
Greenville starter Brandon Workman (5-7) was solid through seven innings in his second straight win. Workman allowed just two hits in seven scoreless innings, striking out two.
The Drive supported him with a pair of runs in the third inning against Mike Kickham. With two outs and a runner at second, Brandon Jacobs tripled to right-center to bring home a run and give Greenville the first lead of the game. Later in the inning Xander Boegarts singled to score Jacobs and push the edge to 2-0.
Kickham (5-9) scattered his share of hits but kept the Drive off the scoreboard after the third inning in the loss. He allowed two runs on nine hits and a pair of walks in 6.2 innings, striking out three.
The GreenJackets had their best chance to get back in the game in the seventh inning when Adam Duvall singled with one out. Josh Mazzola stepped up and hit a drive to deep left-center. Drive left fielder Jacobs made a leaping catch against the wall to rob Mazzola of extra bases, then fired the ball back to the infield where the relay throw was in time to double up Duvall at first base and end the threat.
In the eighth, the GreenJackets got a two-out triple from Joel Weeks, their only extra base hit and one of just three runners they had in the game, but Ryan Scoma struck out to end the inning as the tying run. The Drive extended their lead in the bottom of the inning on a one-out solo home run by Boegarts off Edward Concepcion to go up 3-0.
Andrew Jones retired six of the game's final seven hitters to earn his first save of the season, striking out two in the process.
Ryan Bradley (3-1, 3.80) heads to the mound for the GreenJackets in Saturday's second game of the series to face Greenville's Scott Swinson (4-4, 3.20). First pitch from Greenville comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
