
Power and Pitching Propel Skeeters to Win

WALDORF, MD . - Steve Hammond threw eight innings of one run baseball and the Sugar Land Skeeters hit three home runs en route to a 6-1 series-ending victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at Regency Furniture Stadium. With this being the first game of the second half, the Skeeters sit alone in first place in the Freedom Division at 1-0.
The Skeeters hit three home runs and totaled six extra-base hits on the day against Blue Crabs pitching. They had as many home runs as the Blue Crabs managed hits in the contest.
Hammond (5-5) won for the second time this season against the Blue Crabs as he dazzled in his eight innings of work. He allowed a lone run on two hits and faced just two batters above the minimum. Hammond's eight innings and eight strikeouts are both season-highs. Brian Grening (0-4) lost for the fourth time in five starts allowing six runs on seven hits in seven innings.
Sugar Land jumped on the board first in the 2nd inning. Delwyn Young led off with a double and Nick Stavinoha followed with a double of his own for the game's first run.
After a Luke Murton leadoff home run tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd, the Skeeters offense turned up the heat. Chase Lambin hit a solo home run in the 3rd inning to regain the lead, his fourth of the season. Three more runs came across in the 4th inning. Travis Scott hit an RBI double to deep right-center field and Michael Rockett crushed a two-run home run, his seventh of the season, to make it 5-1.
Brian Barton made it four consecutive innings with at least one run in the 5th with a solo home run to left field for a 6-1 lead. In his first trip back to Waldorf since being traded from Southern Maryland, Barton had at least one hit in every game of the four game series.
The Blue Crabs take to the road to begin a three-game series with the Bridgeport Bluefish beginning tomorrow night at 7:05 pm. Southern Maryland will be back in town for a four-game series against the Camden Riversharks beginning Thursday night at 7:05 pm.
