Bridgeport Fall to Somerset in Extra Innings

(Somerset, NJ. - July 6, 2014) - The Bridgeport Bluefish were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 3-2 in 11 innings on Sunday evening at TD Bank Ballpark.

Bridgeport scored twice in the top of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead as center fielder James Simmons reached on an error by Somerset third baseman Cory Smith, allowing second baseman Juan Martinez to score and then right fielder Prentice Redman drove in Simmons on an RBI single. Bridgeport held that lead until the bottom of the fifth inning when Somerset tied the score at 2-2 off of a two-run home run by shortstop Edwin Maysonet. Neither team would score a run through the ninth inning, forcing extra innings. After a scoreless tenth inning, Somerset loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning and catcher Adam Donachie hit an RBI sacrifice fly, scoring left fielder Cory Harrilchak to win the game in walk-off fashion.

Bridgeport's starting pitcher Tomo Ohka tossed seven innings on the day for the 'Fish, giving up two runs off five hits in the no-decision. After Jaye Chapman and Winston Abreu tossed scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth inning respectively, Tim Gustafson (0-3) pitched an inning and two-thirds before allowing the winning run to come across in the 11th inning. Somerset used seven pitchers in the game as their starter Erik Arnesen left the game after two-plus innings due to an injury. Daniel Herrera (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Patriots after pitching a scoreless 11th inning.

Bridgeport return to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday, July 7th to start the second half of the 2014 Atlantic League season, beginning with a three-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
