Powell ends Express skid
August 26, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
The final road trip of the 2003 season hasn't been a memorable one for the Round Rock Express. However, for eight innings Monday night, Greg Powell pitched the type of game that will stick with the Express for the rest of the year.
Powell allowed only one run in eight innings and five different players drove in a run to lead Round Rock to a 6-2 win over the Wichita Wranglers in front of 1,227 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The Express opened the eight-game trip with five straight losses and were desperate for any kind of positive note to end the season on. So, they turned to one of Round Rock's biggest surprises this year. Slated for the bullpen at the end of Spring Training, Powell moved into the rotation in late May and has combined with Chad Qualls to give the Express a solid top of the rotation in the second half. He consistenly kept Wichita, involved in a three-way race for the East Division's second-half title, off balance and struck out seven without allowing a walk.
He was backed by a balanced lineup that saw seven batters get a hit. Carlos Hernandez picked up three hits and drove in a run. Mike Coolbaugh got Round Rock started when he slammed his seventh home run in the first inning.
That was more than enough to make Powell (7-8) the winner. Zack Greinke (3-3) was the loser after giving up three runs in six innings.
The third game of the four-game series will be Tuesday at 7 p.m.
