WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Pacific Coast League today named Sacramento River Cats shortstop Bobby Crosby its "Rookie of the Year" for the 2003 season. The award, presented annually, is voted upon by the managers and media of the 16 PCL clubs.

"Bobby has had a great season," River Cats manager Tony DeFrancesco said. "He has anchored the defense and has been one of our most valuable bats throughout the year. I had Bobby on my club last year in Midland [Double-A], and it has been fun watching him evolve into one of the most-respected players in the league."

Crosby, 23, is batting ..303 (136-for-449) with 20 HR and 84 RBI in 122 games with Sacramento this season. This week, he became just the fifth player in club history to hit 20 HR and record 20 SB in the same season. Crosby ranks second in the league with 57 extra-base hits and is among the PCL's top five in slugging percentage (.532) and runs scored (83).

Crosby was Oakland's first-round selection in the 2001 Draft out of Long Beach State. In 265 career minor league games (three seasons), he is batting .303 (301-for-995) with 30 HR and 156 RBI.

The PCL will announce the winners of the following awards this week: "Pitcher of the Year," tomorrow; "Most Valuable Player," Thursday; and "Manager of the Year," Friday.

Last week, the River Cats clinched the PCL's South Division for the third time in four seasons, securing a playoff spot. Sacramento will begin the postseason Sept. 3-4 on the road -- returning home Sept. 5-7 to complete the best-of-five series. Tickets for all River Cats home games (including postseason games) are available at the Raley Field Ticket Office, on the internet at www.rivercats.com and at all Tickets.com outlets (select Raley's & Bel Air stores). Fans can also purchase tickets by phone at 916-371-HITS.
