Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Xavier Nady, Rico Washington and Yamid Haad each hit home runs Monday night, as the Portland Beavers moved to within a game of first place with a 5-0 win over the Tacoma Rainiers in front of 5,171 at PGE Park.

Matt Bruback, making his Portland debut and first start since July 20, pitched 5.1 scoreless innings to earn the win, the Beavers fifth straight.

"It was a great feeling; great fans out here." Bruback said. "It was nice to go out there and have everything go my way."

Acquired off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates last week, Bruback scattered four hits, struck out four and walked two.

Following Bruback's start, left-handed relievers Matt Hampton and Cliff Bartosh shut down the Rainiers the rest of the game.

The Beavers (67-70) offense gave its pitching staff an early lead, scoring five second-inning runs. Portland batted around in the frame, sending nine men to the plate.

Nady started the rally, lifting a solo-home run over the left-field wall. Washington, the next batter, also hit a homer, the fourth time the Beavers have hit back-to-back longballs this season.

Then, after singles by Wiki Gonzalez and Donaldo Mendez, Haad hit a three-run shot, his tenth of the year and second of the homestand.

Tacoma (61-75) out-hit the Beavers eight to seven, but wasn't able to capitalize on its scoring chances. The Rainiers left 12 men on base, including three in the first inning.

Chris Wright, who hasn't won a game since being called up from Class AA on July 17, took his sixth consecutive loss for Tacoma. He pitched two innings, allowing five runs on six hits.

NOTES: Bernie Castro, who hit .309 and stole 49 bases before suffering a season-ending knee injury, was named to the All-PCL team Monday ... the Beavers hadn't won five straight since April 8-15 when they won eight in a row ... Nady extended his hitting streak to seven games with his second-inning homer.
