Sioux City Musketeers News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - The Musketeers were back at home on Friday night to take on the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and managed to secure their third straight, beating the RoughRiders by a final score of 5-3.
In the two teams' first meeting it was a former RoughRider, Josh Bohlin, who got the Musketeers on the board first, and tonight it would be another former Cedar Rapids player getting the scoring started for Sioux City.
Kevin Lombardi made an excellent play to pick off a CR pass before beating the Blake Pietila one-on-one to put the Musketeers ahead 1-0 at the 9:39 mark.
Matt Miller would get his seventh goal of the season when he tipped home a shot from Tommy Pasanen to give the Musketeers a 2-0 lead at the 14:32 mark of the 2nd period. Parker Ford had the secondary assist on the play. That would be all the scoring for the period, but Sioux City would have plenty left in the tank.
Cedar Rapids made things interesting early in the 2nd period when Kyle Looft fired home a rebound to cut the Musketeer lead to 2-1 but the Musketeers would respond quickly.
Jordan Steinmetz picked up the puck along the left side boards before walking in on Pietila and firing a beautiful shot top shelf to give Sioux City a 3-1 advantage.
Martin Pospisil extended his point streak to a USHL record FOURTEEN straight games when he fired a puck off a CR defender's skate for his 8th goal of the season. Luke Johnson and Bobby Brink picked up the assists on the powerplay goal.
Four minutes later Viljami Nieminen scored an incredible highlight reel goal to give Sioux City a 5-1 lead. It was Viljami's first USHL goal and it was no doubt one to remember. Luke Johnson had the assist on the play.
Things got a little nerve-racking in the 3rd period for the Musketeers. The RoughRiders wold score two straight goals to cut the lead to 5-3, but Sioux City wasn't about to let this 5-1 lead slip away. The Musketeers tightened the screws after CR's second goal and managed to keep them off the board the rest of the game. Final score 5-3.
Ben Kraws had a busy night in net, stopping 20 of 23 shots sent his way while Pietila made 24 of 29 stops for the RoughRiders.
The Musketeers will return to action tomorrow night for Military Appreciation Night! All Veterans and active duty service members will receive two free tickets when presenting their military ID at the Tyson Events Center box office. Puck drop is set for 7:05; don't miss it!
