MADISON, WISCONSIN - The Chicago Steel never looked back after jumping out to a three-goal lead in Saturday night's 3-1 victory over the Madison Capitols at Capitol Ice Arena. Chicago (5-7-1-0, 11 pts.) scored three times in the first 10:35 of the game to set Madison (3-7-0-2, 8 pts.) on its heels while goaltender Justin Robbins and the Chicago defense took over.
The Steel opened the scoring for the third time this season when center Adam Robbins' persistence at the side of the net paid off 1:48 into the game. After left wing Travis Treloar's attempted shot was blocked down, the puck found its way to the net where Robbins was streaking in towards Madison goaltender Joseph Lamoreaux. Robbins jabbed at the puck and forced past Lamoreaux for the early 1-0 lead.
Chicago then extended the lead with a pair of goals 41 seconds apart midway through the opening period. Steel defenseman Matteo Pietroniro extended his point streak to five games (2-4-6) when he eluded a Capitols skater at the left point before beating Lamoreaux on the glove side.
Moments later, Adam Robbins added an assist when he found right wing Ryan Doolin with a backhanded pass on the two-on-one for Doolin's third goal of the season. The play started in the Steel defensive zone when left wing Jake Schmaltz tied up a Capitols defenseman as Robbins picked up the loose puck and raced into the Madison zone before connecting with Doolin.
Madison would score its only goal of the night when left wing Carson Bantle found room past the glove of Justin Robbins with a backhanded shot on a breakaway 7:42 into the second period.
Justin Robbins finished with 28 saves on 29 shots and held the Capitols scoreless in a 14-shot third period for the home team. The Steel are now 3-0 this season when scoring first.
Chicago is on the road for both contests next weekend as the Steel return to Madison Friday night for a rematch with the Capitols at 7:05 p.m. at Capitol Ice Arena. The Steel then travel to Michigan for a Saturday night showdown with the Team USA U-17 team at 6 p.m. CT.
The Steel return home Friday, Nov. 23 for Elf: A Fifteenth Anniversary Celebration game as the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders come to town. The Black Friday game is also a Steel Family Pack game with a pack of four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas and four chuck-a-pucks starting at just $48.
Tickets for all Steel home games are on sale now starting at just $10 and stadium seating on the glass is available for just $20. Parking is always free. The Steel offer discounted tickets for groups and season ticket plans start at just 5 games for $45.
