Central Illinois Flying Aces News Release
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Flying Aces defeated the Dubuque Fighting Saints, 3-2, in the shootout on Salute to Service Night.
The game began with the Central Illinois players skating out with members of the Peoria Iron Sights Hockey Team for Veterans. This was followed by a ceremonial puck drop with an active member of the Coast Guard who was home on leave. The night also included the Oath of Enlistment ceremony and other recognitions of the service members in attendance.
After a face-off win, Chad Hillebrand (Skokie, Ill.) worked the puck around the boards to Max Ellis (Canton, Mich.). Ellis passed to Sebastian Dirven (Cornwall, Ont.) who blasted one five-hole from the point at 6:52 in the first to strike first.
At 7:32 in the second, Ryan Siedem (Madison, NJ) stole the puck from the Dubuque forward in the defensive zone and kicked it to his stick where he made a quick pass to Dirven. Dirven surveyed his options and drove into the zone. He dropped a pass back to Tate Singleton (West Lebanon, NH) who snapped the puck past Fighting Saints goaltender to give the Aces a two-goal lead.
Dubuque got on the board after James Sanchez one-timed a no-look pass from the slot into the goal at 11:07 in the second.
At 8:26 in the third, the Fighting Saints tied the game when Matias Maccelli tipped a shot past the netminder.
Neither team could break the tie in regulation or overtime.
In the first round of the shootout, Ryan Snowden (Kennett Square, Penn.) made a blocker save on the Dubuque shooter. Cal Kiefiuk (Macomb, Mich.) scored after he got the goaltender to bite and roofed it over him.
In the second round, Snowden blocked the attempted five-hole shot. Max Ellis (Canton, Mich.) out-waited the goaltender and deked to tuck it around the netminder's left pad and secure the game for Central Illinois.
Snowden backstopped the Aces to the victory with thirty-two saves.
Tomorrow afternoon, Central Illinois concludes their three-game weekend with a game against the top-ranked Muskegon Lumberjacks at 4 p.m. at Grossinger Motors Arena. The Flying Aces host Youngstown in a two-game home-stand on Friday, November 16th, and Saturday, November 17th at 7 p.m.
