5 Things to Know about #PORvDAL
Return to Providence Park
FC Dallas returns to Providence Park this Saturday for the first time since Dallas defeated the Timbers on penalties during last season's playoff run. Although Dallas' regular season record away at Portland stands at 1-6-5 all-time, the team can take some confidence from its last trip to Providence Park. However, this time FCD will have to do it with the Portland faithful in the stands, as they were absent last year due to COVID-19 protocols.
Nkosi Tafari
The past few games have seen Nkosi Tafari's stock rise. The second-year defender has started the last five games due to the absences of Matt Hedges and José Martínez, and acquitted himself well- particularly recently. The 24-year-old is dominant in the air and has impressive recovery pace. While he may not have the ball-playing ability of Hedges and Martínez yet, at 24, he still has time to grow in that area.
Midfield Mixup
This Saturday's game will be Dallas' first without midfielder Bryan Acosta who's away with Honduras at the Gold Cup. The veteran has started every single match for FCD this campaign, and has been among the team's strongest performers. The recent transfer of fellow midfielder Tanner Tessmann to Venezia FC in Italy also opens the door for players like Edwin Cerrillo, Brandon Servania and Ema Twumasi to stake their claim- beginning in Portland.
Against Portland
FC Dallas' all-time regular season record against Portland is 1-6-5 (10 GF, 74 GA). Dallas' away record against the club is 8-7-7 (37 GF, 28 GA). Dallas' last game against the Timbers was a 4-1 win on May 1, 2021 at Toyota Stadium. FCD's last game at Providence Park was in the first round of the 2020 playoffs when Dallas defeated Portland 8-7 in penalty kicks.
About Portland
The Timbers are currently in ninth place in the Western Conference with a 4-6-1 record. The team's leading scorer is midfielder Dairon Asprilla with three goals from 11 appearances (six starts). Portland players Jaroslaw Niezgoda, Ismaila Jome, Andy Polo and Jeff Attinella are unavailable for the match through injury. Sebastián Blanco, Marvin Loría and Cristhian Paredes are questionable.
