Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports struck out a season-high 17 times on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Modesto Nuts pitching kept Stockton's bats at bay as the Nuts earned a sweep of a three-game series, handing the Ports an 8-3 loss in their final game of the season in Stockton. Modesto won 12 of the 15 games the two teams played at Banner Island Ballpark.

Stockton jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the first on an RBI single by Alfonso Rivas and a Rivas two-run homer in the third. All three Ports runs came at the expense of Nuts starter Penn Murfee, who did not factor into the decision after going three innings and allowing five hits while striking out five.

Ports starter Hogan Harris kept Modesto's offense quiet until the fifth, when he surrendered a solo home run to Ariel Sandoval that cut the Ports lead to 3-1. It was the lone run allowed by Harris, who pitched five innings and allowed four hits while striking out four.

Modesto began its surge facing the Stockton bullpen in the sixth. Will Gilbert came on in relief of Harris and gave up a walk followed by back-to-back singles to load the bases with one out. After a strikeout, Gilbert was lifted for Peter Bayer (1-1), who gave up back-to-back bases-loaded walks that tied the game at 3-3.

Bayer worked into the seventh and with one out, gave up a single followed by back-to-back walks to load the bases. Eric Marinez came on from the Stockton bullpen and gave up back-to-back two-run doubles to Joe Rizzo and Jack Larsen that gave the Nuts a 7-3 lead.

Bayer would suffer the loss, going one inning and allowing three runs on one hit while walking four.

Modesto added a run in the ninth when Jake Bray gave up three straight singles to begin his outing, the last one hit by Sandoval who drove in his third run of the night and ran the Nuts lead to 8-3. Bray would strike out three straight hitters after allowing the three straight singles to open the frame.

The Modesto bullpen did not allow a run as J.T. Salter worked a scoreless innings in relief of Murfee. Scott Boches (2-6) took over in the fifth and pitched three scoreless innings while striking out eight. Collin Kober closed out the contest with two perfect frames while recording three strikeouts. Boches and Kober combined to set down 11 consecutive hitters to close out the game while Boches notched the victory.

The Ports continue their homestand on Friday night as they welcome the Lake Elsinore Storm to town to open a three-game series. Brady Feigl (5-7, 4.19 ERA) makes the start for Stockton in the series opener, opposed by Lake Elsinore left-hander Aaron Leasher (8-6, 3.38 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
