Nuts Sweep Ports with 8-3 Win

STOCKTON, CA. - Back-to-back doubles helped carry the Modesto Nuts to an 8-3 win against the Stockton Ports on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark.

The Ports (51-58; 18-23) took the initial lead with three runs in the first three innings against Nuts starter Penn Murfee. The righty lasted just three innings before the Nuts' (50-61; 20-21) bullpen heaved five scoreless frames. The Nuts' staff recorded 17 total strikeouts, one shy of their season-high.

J.T. Salter worked around two walks with a strikeout in the fourth. Scott Boches (W, 2-6) tossed three innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. Collin Kober finished the game with two perfect innings and three strikeouts to complete the three-game sweep of the Ports.

The Nuts' offense scored eight unanswered runs against the Ports' staff. Ariel Sandoval started the rally with a solo home run in the fifth. Sandoval drove in three runs in the game. Peter Bayer (L, 1-1) let the Nuts tie the game when he issued back-to-back bases loaded walks in the sixth.

In the seventh, the Nuts took the lead for good when Joe Rizzo launched a two-run double off the right-field wall. Rizzo finished with three hits in the game. Jack Larsen followed and smacked a two-run double of his own to pad the Nuts' advantage. Larsen had two hits in the game.

Joseph Rosa walked three times, reached base four times and scored twice out of the leadoff spot for the Nuts. Jarred Kelenic recorded two hits and a walk with two runs scored.
