Modesto Nuts News Release

STOCKTON, CA (April 21st, 2013) -- Modesto held a 2-1 lead into the 8th inning, but Ports catcher Ryan Ortiz smacked a two-run homer to give Stockton the lead and they held on late for a 4-2 victory over the Nuts on Sunday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark.

After working two scoreless innings in relief, Nuts (8-10) pitcher Nelson Gonzalez (0-2) issued a walk and picked up a strikeout before Ortiz stepped to the plate. Ortiz was able to lift a pitch into the air and with the winds gusting at Banner Island Ballpark it carried just enough to scrape over the top of the fence in left to put the Ports in front. Stockton (12-6) added an insurance run later in the inning on a two-out RBI single from Antonio Lamas to go on top, 4-2.

Ports righty Jon Joseph (0-2) ran into some trouble in the ninth, but he was able to strand a pair on the bases for his second win of the year. With a man on and one out, Ports center-fielder Bobby Crocker made an incredible leaping catch that robbed Tyler Massey of an extra-base RBI hit to help seal the victory for Stockton. Modesto would eventually put two on in the inning, but Joseph struck out Ryan Casteel to finish the game.

Stockton jumped out to an early lead in the second against Nuts starter Ben Alsup, as Lamas drove in a run with a two-out single. Due to a high pitch count, Alsup would only last four innings before handing it over to the bullpen in the fifth. Nick Schnaitmann worked one scoreless frame before Gonzalez took over in the sixth inning.

Trailing 1-0, Modesto tied it in the third against Ports starter Deyvi Jimenez as Jordan Ribera doubled home David Kandilas from first base with two down in the inning. A walk, a throwing error by Ortiz, and a sac-fly from Tim Smalling in the third staked the Nuts to their 2-1 lead that lasted through the eighth.

After winning the first game of the series, 8-5 on Thursday night, Modesto dropped the final three games in Stockton to lose 3-of-4. Modesto left 11 on the bases in another frustrated day at the plate. The Nuts were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, and during the three-game skid went 1-for-25.

The team now heads into their first off day of the season on Monday, before returning to the road in San Jose to start a three-game series against the Giants. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 7:05 p.m. from Municipal Stadium. RHP Dan Winkler (2-0, 1.62) will make the start, opposite RHP Clayton Blackburn (2-0, 1.06) for the Giants.
