Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA - The Rawhide put together a late rally in the bottom of the 8th inning, scoring two runs to overtake the Lake Elsinore Storm and secure a 4-3 victory on Saturday night at Rawhide Ballpark. In a game where top prospect Archie Bradley wasn't as thoroughly dominant as usual, the Rawhide offense took advantage of scoring opportunities when they needed to were able toextend their winning streak to three games.
For the second night in a row, Lake Elsinore (5-11) got on the board in the 1stinning, this time with a little bit of luck. Cory Spangenberg popped up to shallow left field, but the shortstop Sean Jamieson could not come up with the catch as it nicked off of his glove and fell to the ground. Lee Orr took advantage of the error with a groundballRBI single to right field to plate Spangenberg and put the Storm up 1-0.
The Rawhide (9-8) would respond, however, with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. With runners at the corners and one out, Yazy Arbelo grounded out to the first baseman which allowed Evan Marzilli to come home and tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the 3rdinning, Spangenberg blooped a full countRBI single into shallow center to plate Robert Kral and give the Storm a 2-1 lead. Bradley had started to walk off the mound the previous two pitches, thinking he had struck out Spangenberg. Nonetheless, the at-bat continued and Spangenberg made the Rawhide pay.
Lee Orr continues to hit well for the Storm, as he hammered his fourth home run of the season in the top of the 4thinning to straight away center to extend the Storm lead to 3-1. Orr had been hitting in the ninth spot for most of the season, but was moved up to the cleanup spot for Saturday's game.
Archie Bradley had his toughest outing of the season thus far, but pitched well enough to keep the Rawhide in the game. Bradley pitched 6.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out eight Storm batters.
The Rawhide were finally able to catch a break in the bottom of the 7th inning. With runners in scoring position, Raywilly Gomez almost beat out a one-out groundball to the second baseman, but Spangenberg made a nice play to stop the ball and fire over to first in time to record the second out, but Sean Jamieson still scored to cut it to 3-2. With Yazy Arbelo at the dish, Storm reliever Jairo Gomez fired a wild pitch that bounced off the catcher's knee to the backstop which allowed Marzilli to come home to tie it up at 3-3.
In the bottom of the 8th inning, Matt Lollis (0-1)issued a lead off walk to Michael Perezand then Chris Ellison reached when he laid down a bunt and catcher Austin Hedges made an errant throw to second base that skipped into the outfield. Tom Belza sacrificed both runners into scoring position one batter later which set the stage for Kerry Jenkins. Jenkins lined a broken bat grounder down the third base line and Perez came home to score on yet another errant throw, this time from the third baseman Duanel Jones, giving the Rawhide a 4-3 lead.
Kaleb Fleck came on for the save opportunity in what turned out to be a very tense top of the 9th inning. Jace Peterson and Travis Jankowski each reached via singles to put runners on first and second with no outs. Spangenberg sacrificed both runners into scoring position to set it up for the power hitting Yeison Asencio. Asencio hit a hard grounderto the shortstopSean Jamieson who corraled the ball and fired it home to Raywilly Gomez who applied the tag to the charging Peterson for the out, preserving the lead. Fleck then got the dangerous Lee Orr to ground out to Jamieson who made a nice play ranging to his left to pick up the ball and fire it to first base to secure the victory.
Conrad Flynn (2-0)is credited with the win, pitching two much needed scoreless innings. With the victory, the Rawhide climb to 9-8 and are above .500 for the first time this season.
