Von Schamann Earns First Win for Quakes

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Behind a 3-for-4 night from left fielder Scott Schebler and a solid night from starting pitcher Duke Von Schamann, the Quakes crept above the .500 mark by defeating the visiting High Desert Mavericks, 5-3, on Saturday night at LoanMart Field.

Schebler finished a home run shy of the cycle, lacing an RBI double in the second, a two-out single in the sixth and an RBI triple to left-center in the eighth. Schebler has recorded a hit in eight of his last nine games, batting .455 (15-for-33) during that span.

Fellow outfielder Jonathan Garcia helped Schebler anchor the Quakes' offense in the six and seven spots and smacked his second home run of the season. On a 1-0 offering from High Desert starter Trevor Miller, Garcia crushed a solo shot to dead center in the fourth inning to tie the game, 3-3. Garcia added a single in his 2-for-4 night at the plate.

It was a back-and-forth effort between the Quakes and Mavericks, as the game saw three lead changes in the first five innings.

Angelo Songco saw his team-best 12-game hitting streak come to an end, but did pick up his 14th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to center field in the third inning.

Von Schamann was effective in his six-inning outing, surrendering just three runs and fanning three batters. The 6-foot-5-inch right-hander earned his first victory of the season and is now 1-1 with an ERA of 5.06.

Just one night removed from a four-error performance, Rancho was the beneficiary of four High Desert errors.

With one out in the third inning, Quakes center fielder Rob Garvey reached on a throwing error and advanced to second, then raced to third on a throwing error by Mavericks catcher Steven Baron before being cashed in by Songco.

Quakes closer Michael Thomas earned his sixth save in as many opportunities, striking out a pair and surrendering just one hit in two innings of relief.

The victory bumps the Quakes' record to 9-8 on the season heading into the series finale against High Desert on Sunday afternoon. Toeing the rubber for Rancho will be Gustavo Gomez (1-0, 4.66 ERA), while right-hander Jordan Pries (0-0, 5.25 ERA) will face the Quakes for High Desert.
