Modesto Nuts News Release
STOCKTON, CA (April 20th, 2013) -- Modesto jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but wasted several more scoring opportunities throughout the night, and Stockton went on to score five unanswered runs in a 5-2 win over the Nuts on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
Modesto outhit the Ports 7-to-5, but stranded 10 men on the bases and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Tyler Massey belted a 2-run homer to start the third inning, but that was the only offense the Nuts (8-9) would put together as they dropped their second straight game in the series.
Ports starter Blake Hassebrock (1-1) picked up the win after he was able to maneuver out of a few key jams to keep the game close. After Massey's homer in the third made it 2-0, the Nuts put runners at second and third with no outs, but Hassebrock got through the rest of the inning unscathed. Modesto put two in in the fourth with a chance to pad their lead, but once again Hassebrock got out of trouble.
Stockton's offense rewarded Hassebrock's efforts as they plated three runs over the next two innings to take the lead, and added two runs in the eighth to pull away late. After cruising through the first three innings, holding the Ports without a hit, Nuts starter Chris Jensen (0-3) allowed a solo home run to Max Muncy to start the fourth. A two-out RBI double by B.A. Vollmuth late in the inning made it a 2-2 score.
Jensen then issued a lead-off walk to Addison Russell in the fifth, and the Ports executed perfectly to bring him home without a hit in the inning. Russell stole second to get into scoring position, moved to third on a groundout by Antonio Lamas, and was brought home on a sac-fly from Muncy. Jensen took the tough luck loss, giving up three earned runs on just three hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Modesto's only threat the rest of the way came in the sixth when they notched consecutive two-out singles against reliever Seth Frankoff, but the righty was able to strike out Taylor Featherston to get out of trouble.
Stockton added two runs on a double by Tony Thompson in the eighth inning against Nuts reliever Geoff Parker. Jose Macias recorded the final six outs to pick up his second save of the year.
The Nuts return to Stockton (11-6) tomorrow afternoon as they will attempt to earn a split in the four-game series against the Ports. First pitch is set for 2:09 p.m., with RHP Ben Alsup (1-1, 1.13) set to take the hill for Modesto, opposite Deyvi Jimenez who will make his debut for the Ports.
