San Jose Giants News Release
SAN BERNARDINO - The San Jose Giants knocked out a season-high 14 hits en route to an 8-3 victory over the Inland Empire 66ers on Sunday afternoon at San Manuel Stadium. Every San Jose starter finished with at least one hit as the Giants overcame an early two-run deficit to earn the win. San Jose takes three out of four games in the series and improves their overall record to a league-best 13-5.
Kelby Tomlinson (4-for-5, 2B, RBI) had four hits and Angel Villalona (1-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) delivered a key go-ahead two-run double to lead the Giants offensively. Ryan Cavan (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) and Eliezer Zambrano (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) also produced two hits apiece.
Adalberto Mejia (1-0) picked-up his first win of the season after tossing 5 2/3 innings with three runs (all earned) and four hits allowed. He walked one and struck out two during his 76-pitch performance. Mejia retired nine out of the last 10 batters that he faced.
San Jose trailed by a 3-1 margin until pushing across four runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good. Tomlinson started the frame with a single before Myles Schroder's potential double play grounder to shortstop was mishandled by Trevor Hairgrove for an error. Mac Williamson was up next and he grounded an 0-2 pitch through the hole on the left side for a single to score Tomlinson. Cavan then singled on another 0-2 pitch as Schroder raced home with the tying run.
After Devin Harris grounded into a force play for the first out of the inning, Villalona stepped to the plate and belted a double off the fence in left to score two more runs for a 5-3 Giants advantage.
San Jose extended their lead to 6-3 in the top of the sixth as Bobby Haney led off with a fly ball to deep right that was lost in the sun by Andy Workman. Haney was credited with a double on the play before moving to third on a Tomlinson single. Haney then scored when the next batter, Schroder, grounded out.
Mejia's only blemish of the afternoon came in the bottom of the third inning when Inland Empire's Ryan Jones connected for a three-run homer. The left-hander retired the first seven batters that he faced before Abel Baker singled with one out in the third. With two outs, Joel Capote drew a walk and then Jones crushed a home run to right giving the 66ers a 3-1 lead.
Alex Yarbrough followed the home with a single, but Inland Empire wouldn't then manage another baserunner until the sixth. Mejia worked 1-2-3 fourth and fifth innings before setting down the first two batters in the sixth. After Brian Hernandez reached on a two-out infield single, Luis Rojas (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) was summoned from the bullpen and he promptly struck out Michael Snyder to end the inning. Rojas then breezed through a perfect bottom of the seventh to maintain the 6-3 lead.
San Jose added two runs in the top of the eighth to push their advantage to 8-3. Chris Lofton doubled to start the inning before scoring on Tomlinson's one-out double into the right center gap. Schroder then singled to put runners on the corners before Williamson struck out. Then with Cavan at the plate, Schroder was picked-off at first, but managed to stay in a rundown long enough to allow Tomlinson to score from third.
Drew Bowlin (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) kept the 66ers off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings to seal the Giants victory.
Michael Johnson (0-1) suffered the loss out of the Inland Empire bullpen after surrendering all four runs in the top of the fifth.
