Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - After dropping all 10 contests with the San Jose Giants in the first half of the 2016 season, the Stockton Ports have turned a new leaf in the second half. Stockton punctuated a series in which they took three of four from San Jose with a 7-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark before embarking on a seven-game road trip beginning on Monday.

Each team scored in the first inning as Chris Shaw delivered a two-out RBI double in the top of the first for San Jose, while B.J. Boyd supplied an RBI single for Stockton in the bottom of the first.

Stockton broke the tie and took the lead for good in the third. After two quick outs were recorded by Gants starter Jordan Johnson (5-6), Stockton rattled off four straight hits. After back-to-back singles by Sandber Pimentel and Seth Brown, Argenis Raga hit a two-run double to left-center to make it a 3-1 Ports lead. Jose Brizuela followed with an RBI single to make it 4-1.

The Ports tagged Johnson for an additional run in the fifth inning as James Harris tripled to open the frame and scored two batters later on Boyd's second RBI single of the afternoon to make it a 5-1 Ports advantage. Johnson would suffer the loss, going five innings and allowing five runs on a season-high 11 hits while walking three and striking out three.

Ports starter Zack Erwin would pitch into the fifth inning and give up back-to-back one-out hits, a single to C.J Hinojosa and an RBI double to Jonah Arenado to make it 5-2. Arenado advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac-fly by Shaw to cut the Stockton lead to 5-3. With two outs and the bases empty, Erwin was lifted for Koby Gauna (3-0), who gave up a solo home run to Jose Vizcaino, Jr., but then got a groundout to end the frame.

Erwin would be rendered a no-decision as he fell one out shy of qualifying for the victory. He went 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out four. Gauna would be credited with the win after going an inning-and-a-third and allowing just the home run to Vizcaino.

After Sergio Romo set the side down in order, including a pair of strikeouts, on a Major League rehab assignment in the sixth, Dusten Knight took over in the seventh. With two outs and the bases empty, Knight gave up a single to Raga followed by a two-run homer to Brizuela that padded the Stockton lead to three runs at 7-4. Knight allowed two runs on two hits in two innings of work.

Cody Stull entered to begin the seventh for Stockton and pitched two scoreless frames while allowing just an infield single. Carlos Navas (SV, 5) came on to pitch the ninth and notched his third straight save as he set the side down in order, ending the frame with back-to-back strikeouts of Hinojosa and Ronnie Jebavy.

Brizuela went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI on the afternoon, while Raga and Boyd each drove in a pair of runs for Stockton.

The Ports open a seven-game road trip on Monday, beginning with a three-game series versus the Modesto Nuts. In the series opener, Rich Hill (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes the start for Stockton on a Major League rehab assignment, to be backed up by regularly scheduled starter Heath Fillmyer. Modesto will counter with right-hander Ryan Castellani (3-6, 3.90 ERA). First pitch at John Thurman Field is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
