San Jose Giants News Release
STOCKTON, CA - The San Jose Giants suffered a 7-4 loss to the Stockton Ports on Sunday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark. The Ports never looked back after a three-run bottom of the third and knocked out 13 hits in the contest to claim the series finale. With the defeat, San Jose (40-33) dropped three out of four games in the series to Stockton to open the second half.
Jonah Arenado (2-for-4, 2 2B, RBI), C.J Hinojosa (2-for-5) and Cristian Paulino (2-for-4, SB) had two hits apiece to lead the Giants offensively. Jose Vizcaino, Jr. (1-for-3, HR, RBI) added a solo homer while Chris Shaw (1-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI) drove in a pair of runs.
The game began with both teams scoring a single run in the first inning. In the top of the frame, Ronnie Jebavy drew a leadoff walk before Hinojosa singled to put runners on first and second. Arenado then grounded into a double play, but Shaw followed with a double into the right center field gap plating Jebavy with the first run of the day.
Stockton though answered in the bottom of the inning against San Jose starter Jordan Johnson. A walk to James Harris started the inning before Richie Martin singled. B.J. Boyd then lined a single into center to score Harris with the tying run. On the play, Jebavy bobbled the ball for an error allowing Martin to move to third while Boyd took second. Johnson though stranded both runners in scoring position as he set down Joe Bennie on a shallow fly out to center, struck out Sandber Pimentel and induced Seth Brown to groundout.
The game remained tied until the Ports erupted with two outs in the bottom of the third. After Johnson retired the first two batters of the inning, Pimental and Brown delivered back-to-back singles. Argenis Raga then belted a double off the fence in deep center to score both runners for a 3-1 Stockton lead. Jose Brizuela followed with an RBI single to make it 4-1.
The Ports kept the pressure on with another run against Johnson in the bottom of the fourth extending their lead to 5-1. Harris led off with a triple to deep right and scored two batters later on Boyd's one-out single.
The Giants got back into the game with a three-run top of the fifth. With one out, Hinojosa singled before immediately scoring when the next batter, Arenado, clubbed a double into the left field corner. A wild pitch then moved Arenado to third before a Shaw sacrifice fly brought home another run to trim the Stockton lead to 5-3. Koby Gauna relieved Ports starter Zack Erwin after Shaw's sac fly and Vizcaino, Jr. greeted the new hurler with a solo home run down the left field line. The homer, Vizcaino's fourth of the season, brought San Jose to within 5-4. The Giants though wouldn't score for the remainder of the game managing just one hit over the final four innings.
Johnson (5-6) was saddled with the loss after allowing a career-high 11 hits and five runs (all earned) in five innings. The right-hander walked three and struck out three.
San Francisco Giants pitcher Sergio Romo continued his rehabilitation assignment with a scoreless bottom of the sixth out of the San Jose bullpen. Martin was the first batter to face Romo and he hit a line drive into center that was caught by a diving Jebavy for the first out. Romo then registered consecutive swinging strikeouts of Boyd and Bennie to end the inning.
Dusten Knight (2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO) relieved Romo to begin the bottom of the seventh and set down the first two batters of the inning. However with two outs, Raga singled before Brizuela stepped to the plate and crushed a towering two-run home run to right. The round-tripper, Brizuela's sixth of the year, pushed the Ports lead to 7-4.
The Giants' only baserunners over the final four innings were a one-out walk to Rene Melendez in the top of the sixth and a one-out infield single from Daniel Carbonell in the eighth.
Gauna (3-0) was credited with the win after pitching 1 1/3 innings of relief with one run and one hit allowed. Cody Stull pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings for Stockton with just one hit surrendered and two strikeouts. Carlos Navas then struck out two in a perfect top of the ninth inning for his fifth save of the year.
