Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The San Jose Giants had two big innings on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark and they were enough to send the Stockton Ports to their first loss of the second half. San Jose scored three runs in the first and four in the fifth while holding Stockton to just four hits as Stockton lost by a final of 7-4.
San Jose got off to a fast start versus Ports starter Matt Stalcup. With one out in the first, the Giants loaded the bases with one out on a hit and two walks. Jonah Arenado provided an RBI double to right-center to give the Giants a 2-0 lead. Jose Vizcaino, Jr. came up next and hit a sac-fly to center to make it a 3-0 San Jose advantage.
The three first inning runs were the only runs allowed by Stalcup as he would not factor into the decision, going three innings and allowing five hits while walking a season-high three and striking out three.
Stockton's first run came in the second on a leadoff home run to right by Joe Bennie. Bennie was the only batter to reach base over the first three innings as Giants starter Jason Forjet (7-5) retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced to open his outing.
Stockton's offense scored three runs without the benefit of a hit or an error in the fourth. Forjet, who'd walked 16 batters all season in 66 innings pitched entering the contest, issued four straight walks to open the frame, the fourth one to Sandber Pimentel that brought in the second run of the game for the Ports. Seth Brown followed with a sac-fly to center that tied the game at 3-3 and Mikey White came up next and executed a squeeze bunt that scored Bennie from third to make it a 4-3 Stockton advantage.
Forjet would get back-to-back groundouts to escape further trouble and pitch a scoreless fifth. The right-hander went on to pick up the victory, going five innings and allowing four runs on three hits while walking a career-high four and striking out two.
Casey Meisner (0-12) came on in relief to start the fourth inning and struck out the side in order to begin his outing. In the fifth, after the Ports had taken the lead, Meisner issued a leadoff walk to C.J Hinojosa and then gave up a two-run homer to Chris Shaw to make it a 5-4 Giants lead. Meisner would then issue back-to-back walks to Arenado and Vizcaino. After Daniel Carbonell lined out to shortstop, Meisner surrendered back-to-back singles to Ty Ross and Christian Paulino that increased the Giants lead to 7-4 and ended Meisner's night.
Meisner suffered his league-leading 12th loss of the season, going an inning-and-a-third and allowing four runs on three hits while walking three and striking out three.
Both bullpens proved solid down the stretch as Corey Miller and Lou Trivino combined for 4.2 innings of scoreless relief while allowing only three hits in that span. Tyler Cyr made his Cal-League debut for San Jose beginning in the sixth and tossed two scoreless innings. Reyes Moronta set the side down in order in the eighth.
Rodolfo Martinez (SV, 21) took over in the ninth for the Giants and committed a fielding error that allowed Pimentel to reach to open the frame. After a Brown single put runners at the corners with nobody out, Martinez threw a pitch in the dirt that bounced up the first base line. Pimentel came down the line and tried to score from third but was thrown out by the first baseman Arenado. After the out at home plate, Martinez recorded back-to-back strikeouts of White and Iolana Akau to end the ballgame and notch his 21st save of the season.
The Ports and Giants wrap up their four-game set on Sunday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark. Left-hander Zack Erwin (3-7, 5.31 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Jordan Johnson (5-5, 4.13 ERA). First pitch is set for 2:09 p.m. PDT.
