Ports Earn San Jose Split In Twin Bill
June 1, 2006 - California League (CalL1)
Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif- The Ports could have been Giant killers on Wednesday night. Instead, they'll take a split of a doubleheader with the San Jose Giants and remain 6.5 games behind them for first place in the Cal-League North Division.
Stockton's offense dominated Game 1 of the doubleheader, posting 10 runs in a decisive 10-2 victory. The Ports played Game 1 as the visitors at Banner Island Ballpark, making up for a game on April 12 that was rained out at San Jose Municipal Stadium. They were un-phased in playing the role of guest in their own house, knocking three homers, including back-to-back shots from Luke Appert and Richie Robnett and a grand slam from Myron Leslie.
The pitching staff upheld their end of the bargain, as starter Mike Madsen (3-2) earned the win after tossing six innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two. Anthony Moreno (2-3) took the loss for San Jose as he allowed four runs on five hits while walking six.
Game 2 proved to be the more dramatic contest of the night. It was the Giants who came out on top 4-3, but not before the Ports gave them all they could handle.
With San Jose on top 4-1 heading into the bottom of final frame, and with lights-out closer Brian Anderson on the mound, the Ports led off with two singles from Cameron Coughlan and Appert. Coughlan's single rounded off a 4-for-4 performance in Game 2. After Robnett went down swinging for the first out, Tommy Everidge knocked in Coughlan with an RBI single, and Leslie followed with a single of his own to load the bases. Trailing 4-2, new Ports addition Raul Casanova, a former major leaguer, drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-3.
It was Landon Powell who stepped to the plate for Stockton with the bases loaded and one out; the tying run standing 90 feet away. Swinging at the first pitch, Powell grounded a slow-roller up the middle which turned into a 4-6-3 game-ending double play. Powell had been 2-for-3 on the night prior to that, with a single and a double.
Ports starter Trent Peterson (0-4) took the tough loss for Stockton despite pitching well, allowing only two runs on three hits in 3.2 innings of work. Justin Hedrick (3-0) got the win for San Jose as he pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Anderson (SV, 13) managed his league-leading 13th save on the season.
Stockton will try and take three of four from the Giants on Thursday at Banner Island Ballpark. Lefty Ryan Ford (2-4, 4.20 ERA) will be on the hill for the Ports, opposed by lefty Alex Hinshaw (4-1, 3.09) for the Giants. Game time will be at 7:05 p.m.
