On Deck for the San Jose Giants
June 1, 2006 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release
THE SAN JOSE GIANTS...will look to extend their California League Northern Division lead over the rest of their division foes. Entering Thursday's games, the Giants hold a 3 ½ game lead over the Nuts and a 6 ½ over the Ports. San Jose has lost seven of their last ten games to make the race in the Northern Division much more interesting.
HELPING OUT... Justin Hedrick and closer Brian Anderson continue their mastery over California League hitters. The fellow right handed relievers both own an ERA under 2.00 going into the third month of the season. Wednesday night, Hedrick and Anderson pitched San Jose to a much needed 4-3 victory over the Stockton Ports. In relief of starter Caleb Salankey, the pair combined to throw 3 1/3 innings to preserve the lead. Anderson recorded his 13 save of the season to continue to lead the California League pitchers in the category.
SOSA STEPS UP TO THE PLATE...Outfielder Carlos Sosa, added to the Giants roster on May 16th, has shined for San Jose. In Sosa's last ten games, the Dominican outfielder has hit .394 in 33 at bats to lead the Giants in hitting in addition to three runs scored and four RBI. In Wednesday's doubleheader with the Ports, Sosa went 4-6 with a double, triple, and RBI.
STEALING THE WAY TO THE TOP... With stolen base league leader, Modesto infielder Corey Wimberly out of the lineup, Marcus Sanders continues to steal his way to atop the league. Entering Thursday, Sanders' 17 base swipes ties him for second place in the California League, only two behind Wimberly.
THE BAKERSFIELD BLAZE...remain in the cellar of the Northern division with a record of 21-32. Coming into Thursday, the Blaze have lost four straight to leave the team 11 games behind San Jose in the division. Blaze right handed fire thrower Eric Hurley has struck out more than one hitter per inning during the 2006 campaign (61 K's in 59.1 IP). Hurley's impressive ERA of 2.88 in collaboration with his strikeout rate has only landed him with a 3-3 record, as the Blaze have struggled to score runs in Hurley's starts.
