Stockton Ports News Release
SAN JOSE, Ca. - The San Jose Giants scored five runs on two swings of the bat and the Ports left runners on second and third to end the ballgame as Stockton fell 6-5 in the series finale at Excite Ballpark on Sunday evening.
For the third straight game the Giants (30-21) got out to a multi-run lead in the first inning. After Ports' starter Grant Judkins retired the first two hitters on just five pitches, the Giants put runners on the corners after Vaun Brown was hit by a 1-2 pitch and Riley Mahan singled to right field. Victor Bericoto then hit a three-run homer down the line in left field to give the Giants a 3-0 lead.
San Jose got another in the third inning. Mahan started the frame with a walk and moved up to third base with one out on a single to right field by Garrett Frechette. Yorlis Rodriguez then grounded out to Judkins allowing Mahan to score, extending the San Jose advantage to 4-0.
Facing Giants' starter Keaton Winn for the second time in the series, the Ports (19-32) battled back in the fourth inning. A single, fielders' choice and walk put runners on first and second with two outs for Cooper Uhl who lined a double to left field to drive in two runs and cut the San Jose lead in half to 4-2.
The Ports got three more in the top of the seventh against Giants' reliever Esmerlin Vinicio. Robert Puason reached on a single with one out and advanced to third base and a wild pitch and passed ball. After Mariano Ricciardi walked to put runners on the corners, Max Muncy drove a double over the head of Giants' center fielder Alexander Suarez to bring Stockton to within one at 4-3. With runners on second and third and two outs after Denzel Clarke popped out, Kevin Richards delivered with a two-run double down the left field line to give the Ports their first lead, 5-4.
With one swing of the bat, the Giants reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh. With Alexis Cedano on for Stockton and a runner on first with two outs San Jose catcher Max Wright hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field to make it 6-5.
With one out in the ninth the Ports threatened against San Jose closer Tyler Myrick. Max Muncy singled up the middle and Denzel Clarke lined a double over the head of Suarez in center to put runners on second and third with just one out, but Myrick got Richards on a pop out and Shane McGuire on a ground out to shortstop to end the ballgame.
Despite being charged with a blown save allowing three runs in the top of the seventh, Vinicio (3-0) got the win for San Jose. Cedano (0-1) took the loss for the Ports giving up two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings, and Myrick notched his fourth save of the season stranding runners on second and third to end the ballgame.
Concluding their 12-game road trip through Fresno and San Jose 4-8, the Ports return home on Tuesday to open a six-game series against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at Banner Island Ballpark with first pitch at 7:05 pm. Tickets are available at stocktonports.com or by calling (209) 644-1900.
