Stockton Ports News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. - The Stockton Ports earned their second shutout victory of the season on Thursday night at Loan Mart Field. The Boys of Banner Island opened their seven-game Southern California road trip in impressive fashion, scoring seven runs over the first three innings on their way to a 9-0 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.
Joel Peralta (0-1) made the start for the Quakes on a Major League rehab assignment and gave up a triple to Brett Vertigan to open the ballgame. J.P. Sportman came up next and brought him home with an RBI single to left to put the Ports in front immediately. Sportman would score later in the inning on a sac-fly hit by Matt Chapman to make it a 2-0 game. Peralta would be charged with the loss after allowing two runs on two hits while walking one in his lone inning of work.
John Richie took over for the Quakes in the second and also got off to a rocky start, giving up a one-out triple to Franklin Barreto and a walk to B.J. Boyd. With runners at the corners, Vertigan dropped a perfect bunt single to the right side that scored Barreto from third. After Sportman drew a walk, John Nogowski hit a two-run single to left to stretch the Stockton lead to 5-0.
Stockton added a pair of runs in the third on RBI singles by Boyd and Sportman to make it a 7-0 advantage. Richie gave up a final run in the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Sportman, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI as he gave the Ports an 8-0 cushion.
Richie went four innings and allowed six runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out five.
Meanwhile, Ports starter Joel Seddon (4-4), worked well with the big lead from the get-go. Seddon induced a double-play to end the first, pitched around back-to-back one-out singles in the second and a leadoff single in the third to keep the Quakes out of the run column.
Seddon went on to earn the win, matching a career-high with six innings pitched and allowing six hits while striking out four.
The Ports added a final run in the eighth off Quakes reliever A.J. Vanegas. With two outs, Chapman hit a ground-rule double to right and scored on an ensuing single by Branden Cogswell. It was the only run allowed by Vanegas in three innings of relief.
Sam Roberts (SV, 1) entered the game in the seventh and pitched the final three innings for Stockton without allowing a hit. Roberts earned a three-inning save, his first of the season. He pitched around a one-out walk and a two-out fielding error in the ninth to preserve the shutout.
The Ports and Quakes play the second game of their four-game set on Friday night at Loan Mart Field. Dillon Overton (2-2, 3.69 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Rancho Cucamonga right-hander Jeff Brigham (1-2, 5.85 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
