San Jose Giants News Release
ADELANTO, CA - The San Jose Giants achieved season-high totals of 12 runs and 19 hits in a wild 12-10 victory over the High Desert Mavericks on Thursday evening at Heritage Field. The Giants (26-34) jumped out to a 9-0 lead after 3 1/2 innings before holding off the Mavericks late to secure the series-opening win.
Christian Arroyo (4-for-6, 2B, RBI) had four hits while Austin Slater (3-for-6, HR, 3 RBI) homered as part of a three-hit game to lead the San Jose offensive attack. Ty Ross (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) and Ben Turner (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) also smacked two-run homers for the Giants while Jesus Galindo (3-for-5, 2B, SB) added three hits and Brian Ragira (1-for-4, 3 RBI) drove home three runs.
Jake Smith (2-2) notched the win out of the bullpen with scoreless sixth and seventh innings to preserve a slim San Jose lead. Dan Slania recorded the last four outs of the game to pick-up his league-high tying 11th save of the year.
The Giants scored three runs in the first, second and fourth innings against Mavericks starting pitcher Trey Lambert to build a 9-0 lead. Three straight singles from Seth Harrison, Arroyo and Slater to start the game produced the first run of the night. Two batters later, Ryder Jones lined an RBI single into right before Ragira's grounder to third was misplayed by Ryan Cordell for an error plating another run to make it 3-0.
In the top of the second, Galindo led off with a single, stole second and scored on Arroyo's one-out single. Slater then stepped to the plate and crushed a towering two-run home run to left for a 6-0 advantage. The home run was Slater's third of the season.
The Giants kept the pressure on in the fourth inning as Tyler Horan drew a leadoff walk before Jones doubled into the left field corner to put runners on second and third. Ragira followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Horan and then Turner ripped a two-run homer to straightaway center to push the lead to 9-0. San Jose knocked out 14 hits in the first four innings of the contest.
Jose Reyes started on the mound for the Giants and began his night with three scoreless innings. Reyes pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first before retiring six out of seven High Desert hitters over the second and third. The Mavericks though broke through with a five-run bottom of the fourth against Reyes to get back into the game. Back-to-back one-out doubles from Zach Cone and Ronald Guzman produced the first High Desert run. After Kellin Deglan walked, Luis Marte singled to load the bases. Lewis Brinson then hit a high pop-up into shallow center that was dropped by the shortstop Arroyo. Brinson was called out on the infield fly rule, but Guzman raced home on the error to make the score 9-2. The rally then continued when Seth Spivey grounded a two-RBI single into right before Cordell laced an RBI double down the left field line bringing the Mavericks to within 9-5 and ending Reyes' night.
Reyes was charged with five runs (all earned) on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings. The right-hander walked three and struck out three.
The Giants got one run back in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 10-5. Arroyo led off with a double down the right field line - his fourth hit of the game. Slater then singled before Jones was hit by a pitch with one out to load the bases. Ragira followed with a line drive single into left plating Arroyo with the 10th San Jose run of the evening. The Giants though were unable to add to their total in the frame as the next batter, Turner, grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Jeff Soptic (1 1/3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) relieved Reyes and got out of the bottom of the fourth, but struggled in the fifth as High Desert pushed across three more runs. Royce Bolinger led off with a double before Cone stepped to the plate and belted a two-run home run to left. Then with two outs, Marte doubled and Brinson produced an RBI single to cut the lead to 10-8.
Smith maintained the two-run advantage with scoreless sixth and seventh innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Cordell led off with a bunt single, but Smith recovered to set down the next three hitters. An inning later, after the first two batters were retired, Marte singled and Brinson walked to put the tying runs on base, however Smith induced Spivey to fly out to center.
San Jose scored two key runs in the top of the eighth to increase their advantage to 12-8. With one out, Turner walked and then Ross lined a two-run home run to left. The homer was Ross' first of the season.
Ian Gardeck (2/3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO) relieved Smith to begin the bottom of the eighth, but promptly allowed a home run to the first batter he faced, Cordell, to trim the lead to 12-9. Then with two outs, Cone hit an opposite-field solo homer to right center making the score 12-10. Slania then entered and surrendered a single to Guzman, but came back to retire Deglan, the potential tying run, on a groundout to end the inning.
With the Giants still ahead by two runs, Slania returned to the mound in the bottom of the ninth and worked a 1-2-3 frame setting down Marte on a groundout, Brinson on a pop out and Spivey on a groundout to finish the game.
Lambert (2-1) was saddled with the loss after yielding nine runs (all earned) on 12 hits over 3 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two.
Harrison (2-for-6) and Jones (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) also finished with multi-hits games for San Jose.
