Stockton Ports News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Stockton Ports dominated in what was their final day game of the season on Monday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Stockton allowed just five hits and plated nine runs in a 9-0 win over the San Jose Giants, Stockton's fourth shutout victory of the season.
Stockton's first run of the game came across in the second as Seth Brown tripled to open the inning and scored on a sac-fly by John Nogowski. It was the only run allowed by Giants starter Mark Reyes (7-4) until the sixth. With one on and two out, Nogowski came to the plate and delivered a two-run homer to left that made it a 3-0 Stockton advantage.
Reyes suffered the loss as he went six innings and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five.
Ports starter Brett Graves (4-7) allowed just one hit in his six innings of work, a one-out double to Jose Vizcaino, Jr. in the second. Graves pitched around the double, pitched around a hit batter with two outs in the third and pitched around a dropped fly ball with one out in the fourth. After the fourth inning error, Graves retired the final eight batters he faced to close out his outing.
Graves earned his fourth win of the season, going six scoreless innings and allowing one hit while striking out three and not walking a batter.
Stockton widened its lead facing the Giants bullpen in the seventh. Jeff Soptic gave up a leadoff single to Jose Brizuela and, two batters later, hit James Harris. With two outs, Soptic hit Joe Bennie to load the bases and then issued a bases-loaded walk to Brown. An error and a passed ball later in the inning added two runs that would be unearned for Soptic, but gave the Ports a 6-0 cushion. Soptic allowed three runs (one earned) on one hit in his lone inning of wor.
Pat Young took over for the Giants in the eighth to pitch the final two frames. With two on and one out in the ninth, Young gave up an RBI double to Mikey White that made it 7-0. Two batters later with two outs, Brizuela capped off the scoring with a two-run double to right to make it a 9-0 Ports lead. Young allowed three runs on five hits in two innings of work.
Cody Stull, Joey Wagman and Lou Trivino each pitched a scoreless inning of relief down the stretch to close out the game for Stockton and complete the shutout.
Following a day off on Tuesday, the Ports return to Banner Island Ballpark on Wednesday to open a seven-game homestand beginning with a three-game series versus the High Desert Mavericks. Kyle Friedrichs (3-1, 4.23 ERA) makes the start in the series opener for Stockton, opposed by High Desert right-hander Colin Wiles (2-4, 4.86 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
