San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - San Jose's longest homestand of the second half ended with a 9-0 loss to the Stockton Ports on Monday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Stockton scored eight runs over the final four innings on their way to the blowout victory to earn a split of the four-game series. The Giants (48-40) finished their homestand with a 5-3 record.
Daniel Carbonell (2-for-4, 2B) was the only San Jose player with more than one hit. The Giants were held to five total hits in the loss.
Ports starter Brett Graves (4-7) earned the win after tossing six scoreless innings with just one hit allowed. Graves struck out three and walked none during his 65-pitch masterpiece.
Stockton took an early 1-0 lead with a single run against San Jose starting pitcher Mark Reyes in the top of the second. Seth Brown led off the frame with a triple to deep right center field and scored when the next batter, John Nogowski, hit a sacrifice fly to center.
The Giants put the potential tying run into scoring position in the second, third and fourth innings against Graves, but were unable to draw even. In the bottom of the second, Jose Vizcaino, Jr. crushed a one-out double to deep left center - San Jose's only hit hit against Graves - but was stranded when Carbonell grounded out and Cristian Paulino struck out. An inning later, Ronnie Jebavy was hit by a pitch with two down before stealing second. Graves though induced Robbie Garvey to fly out to retire the side. Then in the fourth with one out, Dylan Davis' fly ball to deep right center was dropped for a two-base error. Consecutive groundouts though from the next two hitters, Vizcaino and Carbonell, ended the inning.
Meanwhile, Reyes settled in for the Giants to keep the score at 1-0. The left-hander pitched around a pair of two-out singles in the top of the third. He then worked through a two-out walk in the fourth before tossing a 1-2-3 fifth inning. The Ports though used the long ball in the top of the sixth against Reyes to extend their lead. After Reyes retired the first two batters of the inning, Brown was hit by a pitch. Nogowski then belted the first pitch of his at-bat over the fence in left for a two-run homer. The home run, Nogowski's third of the season, made the score 3-0.
Reyes (7-4) was saddled with the loss after yielding three runs (all earned) on six hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out five.
Stockton then broke the game open with a pair of three-run innings against the San Jose bullpen. With Jeff Soptic (1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO) on the mound in the top of the seventh, Jose Brizuela led off with a single before two hit batters loaded the bases with two outs. Soptic then walked Brown to force home a run. Nogowski was up next and his grounder to shortstop was mishandled by Richard Rodriguez for an error as another run scored. A passed ball then plated a third run to push the lead to 6-0.
The Ports capped the scoring with a three-run top of the ninth against Pat Young (2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO). A pair of singles put two runners on with one out before Mikey White delivered an RBI double. Brizuela then stepped to the plate with two outs and smacked a double to deep right scoring two more Stockton runs for a 9-0 cushion.
The Giants threatened in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to breakup the shutout. With two outs, Carbonell doubled down the right field line before Paulino drew a walk, but Ports reliever Lou Trivino set down Rene Melendez on a fly out to right to end the game.
Notes: * The Giants were shutout for the second time on the homestand and eighth time this season - tied for the league lead (Modesto). * Stockton out-hit San Jose 12-5. * The Giants were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base. * San Jose is still 13-5 against the Ports this season.
On Deck: Following an off day, the Giants embark on an eight-game Southern California road trip to Lancaster (four games) and High Desert (four games). Wednesday's series opener against the JetHawks at The Hangar is scheduled to begin at 6:35 PM. Jason Forjet (8-6, 4.45 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Lancaster is expected to counter with Josh James (7-2, 3.25 ERA). The game can be heard live on sjgiants.com with coverage beginning at 6:05 PM.
