Visalia Blazed for Seven Runs in the First by Bakersfield

VISALIA, CA - Bakersfield (51-37, 14-4) repeated the feat from an evening ago and scored seven runs in the first inning against Visalia (51-35, 7-10) en route to a 13-9 win at Recreation Ballpark on Sunday night.

RHP Joel Payamps (2-2, 5.19) made his fifth start and didn't get out of the first inning, relinquishing seven runs (six earned) on five hits, three walks and an error. The first three hits of the frame for Bakersfield were all infield singles and Payamps walked in two runs in his worst outing of the season.

RHP Nick Baker entered the game and allowed a solo home run to LF Jay Baum in the fifth to push the lead to 8-0 Blaze. Baker pitched 4.1 innings and gave up two hits, a run, a walk and he struck out three.

Visalia, against Blaze RHP Zack Littell (2-0, 2.25) scored three runs all in the fifth inning. CF Zach Nehrir doubled and then C Tyler Baker walked. 1B Cody Regis reached on an infield single to load the bases. SS Robelys Reyes knocked in a run with a fielder's choice and Bakersfield committed an error on the play that allowed Baker to score the second run. 2B Domingo Leyba doubled home Reyes and the score was 8-3.

Newly signed RHP Markus Solbach entered and allowed three RBI doubles in a three-run sixth inning that saw Bakersfield extend the lead to 11-3.

Littell pitched six innings and gave up just the three runs (earned) on five hits, a walk and he struck out four in the win.

RHP Kody Kerski entered and was roughed up by Visalia for six runs in the eighth inning. Baker drove in two with a double, his second two-bagger of the game. Reyes, RF Stryker Trahan, LF Grant Heyman and Reyes and Regis all had single RBIs in the inning to pull within two at 11-9.

Solbach remained in the game for the ninth and DH Tyler Marlette doubled to open the inning. After a Baum single that moved Marlette to third 1B Justin Seager reached on an error that put runners on first and second and brought home a run to make it 12-9 Bakersfield. After an Aaron Barbosa single loaded the bases, 3B Jordan Cowan walked to push home a run and make it 13-9 Blaze.

RHP Thyago Vieira (SV: 3), who finished the eighth inning, pitched a one, two, three ninth to close out the Blaze win.

The four game series wraps up tomorrow night with a 6 p.m. first pitch from Rawhide Ballpark. Visalia will send LHP Cody Reed (0-4, 5.81) to the mound for his seven start of the season against LHP Tyler Pike (5-5, 4.05). Tomorrow is Make-A-Difference Monday presented by Fresno Pacific University - Visalia Campus and it's Christmas in July Night.
