Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - Thursday night marked a new half of the season and a new result for the Stockton Ports versus the San Jose Giants. After coming up empty in 10 First Half meetings with San Jose, Stockton scored five runs in the fourth inning on its way to a 5-0 win over the Giants to kick off the Second Half of the 2016 season at Banner Island Ballpark.
Ports starter Kyle Friedrichs (3-1) was sensational for a fourth straight outing. Friedrichs gave up a one-out single to Steven Duggar in the first inning and proceeded to retire the next seven batters in succession. Friedrichs pitched around a two-out double by Ronnie Jebavy in the third and back-to-back two out singles in the fifth to keep San Jose out of the run column.
Friedrichs went on to earn the victory, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing five hits and striking out eight without issuing a walk. Friedrichs, over his last four outings, has pitched 25 innings and struck out 31 without issuing a walk while posting a 2.52 ERA in that span.
Stockton's offense, which did not have a hit through three innings, came to life versus Giants starter D.J. Snelten (3-6) in the fourth. After three straight singles to open the inning loaded the bases, Snelted struck out Sandber Pimentel for the first out of the inning. The Ports, however, would then get back-to-back singles from Iolana Akau and Mikey White, with Akau driving in the first run of the game and White the next two to give the Ports a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, Richie Martin delivered a two-run single to left to make it a 5-0 advantage.
Snelten suffered the loss after allowing five runs on six hits over four innings pitched.
Both bullpens were strong down the stretch as Cody Stull, Lou Trivino and Carlos Navas each worked a scoreless inning for Stockton, while Jeff Soptic and Dusten Knight logged two scoreless innings apiece for San Jose.
The Ports and Giants play the second game of their four-game set on Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Sean Manaea (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes the start on a Major League rehab assignment for the Ports on Friday night. He'll be opposed by Giants left-hander Mark Reyes (6-1, 3.74 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
