Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Despite the best first-half in team history, the Quakes missed out on winning the First Half South Division crown, finishing the half a game back of the High Desert Mavericks. Rancho exacted a small amount of revenge on Thursday, taking the second-half opener by rallying for a 4-3 win over the Mavs at LoanMart Field.
Devan Ahart had a bizarre walk-off hit as the Quakes dropped the Mavs for the fifth time in seven head-to-head meetings this year.
In the last of the ninth, the Quakes loaded the bases thanks to a walk, an error and a hit. With two down and the bases loaded, Mavs' reliever Scott Williams (1-2) appeared to get Ahart on a fly ball to right field. But right fielder Jairo Beras apparently lost the ball in the lights, allowing it to fall to the ground untouched, as Joey Curletta came in to score the game-ending run.
Quakes' starter Yaisel Sierra was cruising until the third, as he retired the first seven hitters he faced before running into a tough stretch. Sierra hit Mavs' first baseman Tripp Martin, then gave up a hit to Michael De Leon. With the count at 3-2 on Scott Heineman, Sierra was called for a balk, then was ejected by base umpire Ryan Powers. Manager Drew Saylor came out to inquire as to why his pitcher was ejected and was eventually tossed from the game as well, also by Powers, who was umpiring his first game in the Cal League since being promoted from the South Atlantic League.
Philip Pfeifer came on and not only struck out Heineman, but got Jose Cardona to ground out, ending the High Desert threat.
The Quakes got on the board, tallying three runs in the fourth off Mavs' starter Tyler Davis (3-3). An error by De Leon opened the door, as with Matt Beaty aboard via the error, Rios swatted a 403-foot homer to right-center, his third of the year in a Quakes' uniform to make it 2-0. Two batters later, Michael Ahmed doubled, then came home on a Garrett Kennedy double, making it a 3-0 affair.
Chris Anderson followed Pfeifer out of the bullpen, tossing a scoreless inning, before handing it off to David Reid-Foley, who got knocked around in his one inning of work.
Foley walked a pair of hitters, then gave up a one-out homer to Beras, whose ninth of the year made it a 3-3 game in the seventh.
High Desert finished with just three hits on the night.
?The Quakes (1-0, 43-28) will look to make it two straight over the Mavs on Friday night, sending Tommy Bergjans (2-7) to the hill against Mavs' right-hander Adam Quintana (2-3).
Friday night will be another Family RV $1 Family Feast Night, as fans will enjoy one dollar hot dogs, Pepsi products and ice cream sandwiches. Game time is set for 7:05pm and tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
