Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Garrett Stubbs came through with a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning to send the JetHawks to an 8-7 victory over the Lake Elsinore Storm in the first game of the second half on Thursday night at The Hangar.
The double by Stubbs, his second walk-off hit this season, came with one out after Antonio Nunez reached two batters earlier on a fielding error by right fielder Franchy Cordero. Bobby Boyd followed with a ground ball to short, and Nunez was caught in a run down between second and third, but managed to make it back to the bag safely.
Down to their final strike in the bottom of the ninth inning, Lancaster tied the game on a RBI single by Brooks Marlow, scoring Jason Martin all the way from first base. The throw to the plate appeared to beat Martin, but he snuck underneath the tag according to home plate umpire Kyle Wallace. Lake Elsinore Manager Lance Burkhart was promptly ejected for arguing the call.
The Storm took advantage of two wild pitches by Jacob Dorris (1-0) in the top of the eighth inning to take a 7-6 lead. Dorris, despite walking four, struck out five and picked up his first win. Dorris and Yeyfry Del Rosario combined to toss 5.1 innings without allowing a hit.
Colby Blueberg (0-1), Lake Elsinore's All-Star closer, blew his first save of the season in the ninth and suffered his first loss of the year in the 10th, when his All-Star teammate Stubbs delivered the game-winning hit.
Each team put up single runs in the opening inning. After a scoreless second, the Storm scored three times in the third, only to see the JetHawks take the lead with four runs in the bottom of the frame. All-Star Bobby Boyd hit a two-run homer and Bryan Muniz drove in a pair with a double. He also had an RBI triple in the contest.
The Storm scored twice in the fifth to re-take the lead, the first run coming on a long home run by All-Star Josh VanMeter, his 10th of the season. Lancaster tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Jason Martin's RBI single.
The JetHawks (35-35) and Storm (32-39) continue their four-game series tomorrow night at The Hangar. Josh James (5-2) will start for Lancaster against Zech Lemond (1-2). First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
The JetHawks are celebrating their 20th anniversary season in Lancaster. Great ticket packages and group events are on sale now at jethawks.com or by calling (661) 726-5400.
