Portland's Offense Lights out in 12-5 Win over Binghamton

Binghamton, New York - Tyler Dearden celebrated his birthday with a two-for-three night, including a homer and three RBI, as well as a 12-4 Portland Sea Dogs (36-41) victory over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (31-46) on Wednesday at Mirabito Stadium.

The Sea Dogs got the scoring started in the top of the second inning against Rumble Ponies starter Jesus Vargas. With one out, David Hamilton blasted a solo homer to right-center. It was his seventh long ball of the year and gave Portland a 1-0 lead.

Binghamton answered immediately in the bottom of the second against Portland starter Victor Santos. Wyatt Young clubbed a one-out, solo home run. It was his first of the season and tied the game 1-1.

Four runs scored for the Sea Dogs in the top of the third with Vargas still on the mound. Elih Marrero reached on a fielding error, Alex Binelas singled, and Ceddanne Rafaela reached on another error to load the bases. Christian Koss singled to center, scoring Marrero, regaining the lead 2-1. Tyreque Reed made it back-to-back singles, driving in Binelas and Rafaela, expanding Portland's lead to 4-1. Stephen Scott added the final run of the inning, driving in Koss with the help of another error, bringing the lead to 5-1.

Both teams brought in three runs in the sixth inning. In the top half, Dearden got things started with a solo shot to right, increasing the advantage to 6-1. Nick Sogard doubled, Elih Marrero walked, and Sogard came in to score on an errant pickoff attempt, making the score 7-1. Binelas drove in Marrero with an RBI triple, giving the Sea Dogs an 8-1 lead.

The Rumble Ponies fought back in the bottom half of the sixth. Brett Baty and Carlos Cortes led off the inning with singles. Luke Ritter tripled to left, scoring both runners, cutting into Portland's lead, 8-3. Young was able to bring around Ritter on a groundout to second base to bring Binghamton one run closer, 8-4.

Four more runs poured in for the Sea Dogs in the top of the eighth inning. Marrero doubled and Rafaela reached on a throwing error. Koss brought in Marrero on a groundout, making it 9-4. Scott added an RBI base hit and Dearden drove in another with a single, increasing the lead to 12-4. Binghamton scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI groundout from Baty, but the Sea Dogs held strong, winning 12-5.

Santos (7-7, 4.28 ERA) picked up his seventh win of the season, working through 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out three. Vargas (0-6, 8.58 ERA) tossed 5.1 innings, surrendering seven runs (four earned) on eight hits while striking out three in his sixth loss of the year.

The Sea Dogs and Rumble Ponies play the third game of a six-game series with a 6:35 PM first pitch at Mirabito Stadium on Thursday. Portland sends RHP Brett Kennedy (1-4, 5.46 ERA) to the mound against Binghamton RHP Alec Kisena (2-6, 4.91 ERA).
