Reading Fightin Phils News Release

The Reading Fightin Phils fell 5-2 to the Richmond Flying Squirrels on a hot and wet Wednesday. The Fightins notched just three hits to the Flying Squirrels six, but an opponent's grand slam did them in.

It took the Fightin Phils until the sixth inning to record their first hit. They did rack up eleven walks and a hit by pitch to reach the bases.

A leadoff double from Jacob Heyward started off the third inning strong for the Flying Squirrels. With the bases loaded on walks and a fielder's choice, Frankie Tostado belted a grand slam to right center putting Richmond up 4-0.

Kevin Vicuna had a pop up into shallow center for Reading's first hit of the game. Jonathan Guzman followed it up with an RBI double to score Wendell Rijo, who walked to reach. The R-Phils trailed 4-1.

In the bottom of the seventh an RBI single from Mike Gigliotti brought home Heyward, but Simon Muzziotti's outfield assist ended the frame.

The Fightins had the bases loaded full of walks in the eighth. Vicuna walked in Jhailyn Ortiz but the R-Phils could not do anymore damage.

Griff McGarry threw two and a third innings leaving with the trainer and the bases loaded.

Braden Zarbnisky was called upon to get out of the inning. He let up a home run, a grand slam, where all but the batter tracked back to McGarry. He went on to pitch two 1-2-3 frames, his longest outing of the season (2.2 IP) and his highest strikeout count of his career (5).

Matt Seelinger took the sixth inning clean. He allowed one unearned run in the seventh.

Francisco Morales had a clean frame in the eighth.
