Portland Winterhawks News Release
Hawks Happenings On The Ice:
The Winterhawks are back in the WHL final for the third straight season, making them the seventh franchise in league history to make three straight trips to the championship series.
It has previously been done by the Red Deer Rebels (2001-03), Medicine Hat Tigers (1986-88), Kamloops Blazers (1984-86), New Westminster Bruins (1975-78, four straight), Edmonton Oil Kings (1969-72, four straight) and Flin Flon Bombers (1968-71, four straight).
It's Portland's 11th trip to the championship series in franchise history, with wins in 1982 and 1998.
The Hawks' opponent in the championship series will be either the Calgary Hitmen or Edmonton Oil Kings. The Hitmen won Game 6 in overtime yesterday to force a Game 7 tomorrow night in Edmonton. If the Oil Kings advance it will be a rematch of last year's WHL Final, and would mark the first rematch in the league championship series since the New Westminster Bruins and Saskatoon Blades met in 1975 and 1976.
Ty Rattie was named MVP of the Western Conference Final after scoring four goals and adding eight assists for 12 points in the five-game series. He now has 45 career postseason goals, second in league history, just two behind all-time leader Mark Pederson's 47. His 90 total playoff points are third in WHL history, 10 behind Greg Hawgood for second place and 13 behind all-time leader Dale Derkatch.
