Portland Winterhawks News Release
Hawks Happenings On The Ice:
The 2010-11 regular season gets underway this week, and the Winterhawks go into the season as the top-ranked team in the WHL, as selected by a panel of NHL scouts. The Winterhawks open the 2010-11 campaign Saturday night in Seattle, followed by the first regular season home game next Monday against Vancouver in a rematch of last season's second round playoff series. Portland finished the preseason without a regulation loss, going 4-0-0-2 in six games, despite missing as many as 13 players to NHL prospects camps and tournaments.
When the Winterhawks open the season Saturday in Seattle, they'll be looking to build on the 12-0 record they established against the Thunderbirds in last year's season series. The two teams have been going head-to-head for 33 seasons, and last year was just the second time one team had gone undefeated against the other, the other being Portland's 10-0 sweep in the 1980-81 season.
Hawks Happenings Off The Ice:
After the September 27 game against Vancouver, the Winterhawks host Seattle on Saturday, October 2 when season ticket and package holders get the first of 10 gifts this season, a Nino Niederreiter bobblehead doll. All season ticket and package holders will get one of the collectible dolls featuring the fifth overall pick in the NHL Draft. It's not too late to get in on the fun, just call 503-236-HAWK for information on five and 10-game ticket packages.
The remodeling of Valley Ice Arena, to be known as the Winterhawks Skating Center upon completion, continues. With new ice, boards and glass, enough progress has been made in the rink that the Winterhawks will be holding practice there this week. Remodeling continues throughout the rest of the facility, including the lobby, locker rooms, washrooms and offices. A public grand reopening will be held in October.
