Portland takes slugfest

Portland out lasted Colorado Springs 13-7 on Monday evening at Security Service Field as the two teams slugged it out in game three of their four game series. The teams combined to score 20 runs and knock out 32 hits on the evening as they endured 3:04 of play and a rain delay as well. Jack Cassel (2-2) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief and Eric DuBose (0-1) took the loss after giving up eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits over 3.1 innings.

The first inning started out smooth enough with the Sox and Beavers quickly working through the inning but as soon as the last out was recorded in the bottom half of the inning, the skies opened up. The grounds crew put the tarp on the field and after a 1:03 delay play resumed.

DuBose remained in the game despite the long layoff and surrendered three runs. He gave up a lead off double to Jack Cust and after one out, Vince Sinisi doubled home Cust with a drive to deep right. DuBose then got Luis Cruz to pop out to first in foul territory but walked the next two batters (one intentionally) to load the bases. Leadoff hitter Craig Stansberry made the Sox pay as he lined a two-run double down the left field line to make it 3-0. The inning may have continued even further but Ian Stewart made an amazing play in foul territory to end the inning. Brett Dowdy sent a high pop fly towards the the left field berm and Stewart leaned over and caught the ball as he flipped over the fence.

In the third, DuBose was touched up again when Cust belted a one-out, solo homer to deep right, his seventh of the season. The scoring continued in the fourth as the Beavers batted around. Stansberry singled in a run, Dowdy doubled in another and McAnulty double in two more making the score 8-0.

The Sox mounted a comeback in the fourth as they batted around against reliever Steve Watkins. In the inning, Colorado Springs plated five runs on six hits including a two-run homer by Ryan Spilborghs and a three-run bomb by catcher Edwin Bellorin.

Mike Esposito came on in relief of DuBose and in the fifth and was shelled for 4 runs on 6 hits in the inning. The highlight of the inning was a two-run double by Stansberry, who finished the game 4-for-6 with two runs scored and five RBI.

Sean Barker continued his torrid hitting streak as he homered in his third straight game with a solo bomb off of Watkins in the fifth to cut the lead to 12-6 and Omar Quintanilla doubled home Bellorin in the sixth to make it 12-7.

Cust struck again in the seventh, this time off reliever Tom Martin. Cust ripped a solo homer to right, his second of the game and league-leading eighth of the season, to make it 13-7.

Tomorrow's 10:35 AM game will feature RHP Marc Kaiser (0-1, 5.73) for the Sox against RHP Justin Germano (2-0, 2.65) for Portland.
