
Portland Sweeps Binghamton; Wins Seventh Straight

Binghamton, New York - Izzy Wilson went 3-for-4, driving in a run and scoring one himself, helping the Portland Sea Dogs (40-41) complete the six-game series sweep over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (31-50) with a 3-0 win on Sunday at Mirabito Stadium. Portland extends their winning streak to seven games with the victory.
Portland opened up the scoring in the top of the fourth inning against Binghamton starter Jose Chacin. Christian Koss got things rolling with a one-out double. Izzy Wilson quickly brought him home, taking a base hit to center field, plating Koss to take a 1-0 lead.
The Sea Dogs put up another run in the top of the seventh inning with Chacin still on the mound. Wilson led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a groundout from Tyreque Reed. Stephen Scott hit into a fielder's choice at first base, allowing Wilson to score, adding the Portland's lead, 2-0.
An insurance run came in to score for the Sea Dogs in the top of the ninth. Wilson collected a one-out base hit to get the offense rolling. Scott doubled down the left-field line, scoring Wilson from first, increasing the advantage for Portland, 3-0.
Binghamton avoided the shutout in the bottom of the ninth. Wyatt Young worked a leadoff walk and Brett Baty moved him to second on a groundout. Luke Ritter drove him home with a double to right, making the score 3-1. Ryan Fernandez recorded the final two outs, closing out a series sweep for the Sea Dogs with a 3-1 victory.
Brian Van Belle (4-1, 3.21 ERA) tossed 7.0 shutout innings, allowing just three hits, walking none, and striking out five in his fourth win of the year. Chacin (0-6, 6.87 ERA) hurled 7.0 innings, letting up two runs on four hits, walking none, and striking out nine in his sixth loss of the season.
The Sea Dogs enjoy a league-wide off-day on Monday before opening a six-game series against the Somerset Patriots on Tuesday at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field.
