Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - With the Gary South Shore RailCats season having been less than stellar, the club has stayed busy trying to lay the foundation of an improved 2016 team. One of the pieces the RailCats signed late this season with hope of helping next season was OF Anthony Cheky. Late Friday the club announced that Cheky has been activated from the disabled list and will be available for the club for the final weekend of the season. The South Shore also placed RHP Charle Rosario on the disabled to finish the season.
The RailCats signed Anthony Cheky, a local product from Portage, Indiana on August 29 following a 2015 Senior season for the Michigan State Spartans of the Big 10. Cheky was a four year starter and led conference in stolen bases twice in 2013 and 2014. Despite playing with a nagging back injury in 2015 Cheky played in 42 games for MSU hitting .312 scoring 22 runs with 20 RBI and 12 stolen bases.
As a Junior in 2014, Cheky was the leader in stolen bases in the Big Ten with 29 while also setting the single season mark for the Spartans. In 2013 he started 44 games as a Sophomore with a .278 average with a .342 OBP. In Cheky's first year at East Lansing he started 39 games in center field with 15 stolen bases and was third on the team with a .311 average.
Cheky was named to the 2011 Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association First-Team All-State 4A and served as a captain his senior season at Portage High School and named team MVP his junior year, hitting .523.
Charle Rosario will finish the season as the RailCats "ace" and team leader in all major pitching categories and a 12-8 record. Rosario last pitched for the South Shore Thursday night working seven innings allowing four earned runs in a 4-1 loss to the Saints.
The RailCats close out their series and final game of their final road trip Friday night at CHS Field in St. Paul. The RailCats will host Kansas City in the final three games of the season starting Saturday night at 6:10pm.
