Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Winnipeg, MB- The Sioux Falls Canaries (37-59) continued their four-game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes (44-52) on Thursday night at Shaw Park. The Birds' erased a three run deficit with a two-run 7th inning, but the Goldeyes added three runs in the bottom of the 8th to cap off a 6-2 final score.
Canaries starting pitcher Ray Hanson (1-1, 5.29 ERA) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing three runs on five hits over five innings. The Right-hander battled command issues most of the night, walking two batters and striking out three in his shortest outing in a Canaries uniform.
Kyle Anderson (5-6, 4.77 ERA) faced the Canaries for the third time this season, picking up his first win against the Birds, after allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits over 6 1/3 innings. Anderson left the game in the top of the 7th after allowing Brian Humphries and RJ Perucki to score, making it a one run game. Reliever Rhett Varner recorded the final two outs of the inning, striking out Cody Bishop before Chris Grayson flew out to right, leaving the potential tying run at third base.
The Canaries threatened again in the top of the 8th inning after Jason Repko worked his way on base with a lead-off walk. David Bergin also reached base on an intentional walk, but the Birds offensive attack stalled, after Humphries struck out, and pinch runner Brett Balkan was caught trying to steal second base.
The Goldeyes broke the game open in the bottom of the inning after Josh Mazzola roped a double into the gap in left-center, plating home Casey Haerther and Luis Allen. Mazzola scored the final run in the three-run inning on a Brad Boyer two-out double, making it a 6-3 ball game.
Jerome Pena had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, while Perucki and Humphries each finished the day 1-for-4 with a run scored.
The Canaries wrap up their four-game series against the Goldeyes on Friday night at 7:05 PM with LHP Miguel Pena (6-7, 3.58 ERA) making his final start of the season. A Canaries win on Friday night would give the Birds their second series win of the season against the Goldeyes, and their first season series win since 1999 when both teams were a member of the Northern League.
The Birds return home to wrap up the 2015 season with a Labor Day weekend series against the Joplin Blasters. Saturday night is Bark in the Park night and Stampede night at the Birdcage. Gates open at 5:00 PM with a pre-game meet and greet with Stampede players and coaches, and music from the Cartwright Brothers!
