Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
A couple of eighth-inning doubles by Josh Mazzola and Brad Boyer gave the Winnipeg Goldeyes all the insurance they needed on a muggy Thursday evening at Shaw Park.
Leading 3-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Casey Haerther and Luis Alen led off with singles, Mazzola doubled to drive in both base runners and then Boyer doubled to score Mazzola and the Goldeyes had plenty on the board.
Winnipeg put a halt to a three-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the visiting Sioux Falls Canaries and can now split the season series with a win on Friday night. Sioux Falls has not won a season series from Winnipeg since 1999.
Thanks to Thursday night's victory, the Goldeyes improved to 44-52 on the season and 19-27 at home.
Lefty Kyle Anderson gave the Goldeyes a solid start, going six and a third innings, allowing just two runs on six scattered hits. After a rough start last weekend, Anderson threw strikes, kept the ball down and kept the Canaries off the bases until he ran into a jam in the seventh.
"Baseball is such a random game," said Anderson who also said he'd love to come back and pitch for the Goldeyes next season. "I'm a guy who pitches to contact and when I get the ball up in the zone, they'll hit line drives to the gap. Tonight, I kept the ball down and for the most part, they just hit ground balls."
The Goldeyes opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second as Josh Mazzola was safe on an infield hit, Tillman Pugh was safe on a fielder's choice, Brad Boyer walked to load the bases and Casio Grider singled to score Mazzola and Pugh.
The Fish made it 3-0 in the third when Reggie Abercrombie was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Luis Alen.
Sioux Falls rallied for a pair in the seventh and had a runner on third with one out when Goldeyes manager Rick Forney replaced Anderson with Rett Varner and Varner got Cody Bishop to strike out and Chris Grayson to fly out to right to end the rally.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Goldeyes put up a gigantic three spot to put the game away and then Jailen Peguero came in to shut the Canaries down in the ninth.
The Goldeyes finished with six runs on 10 hits, while the Canaries had two runs on six hits. Mazzola led the Fish, going two-for four with two runs scored and two driven in. Boyer had three hits and an RBI and Alen had two hits in three at bats with a run scored and a run driven in.
Anderson (5-6, 4.77 ERA) earned the win in his final start of the season for Winnipeg. Canaries starter Ray Hanson (1-1, 5.29) was tagged with the loss. Peguero picked up his 16th save for Winnipeg.
The Goldeyes and Canaries will play the final game of this four-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Shaw Park. Left-hander Matt Jackson (8-8, 4.76 ERA) will take to the mound for the Goldeyes, while lefty Miguel Pena (6-7, 3.58 ERA) is slated to take to the bump for Sioux Falls.
Tickets for all of the Goldeyes' final four home games are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
