Birmingham Barons News Release

It was just your everyday, run-of-the-mill, rain-shortened no-hitter at Regions Park Monday night.

But Aaron Poreda will take it. The big left-hander tossed five-innings of no-hit baseball to give the Barons a 3-0 win in what was supposed to be the first game of a double header against the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx.

Poreda (2-3, 1.65) earned just his second win despite not allowing more than two runs in any of his five starts on the season. He struck out eight batters but walked five.

The Barons tried to play small-ball in the first inning, moving John Shelby to third base on a bunt by Robbie Hudson and a ground out by Gordon Beckham. The lead off hitter came across to score on a Tyler Flowers line drive to right field. A Brandon Allen walk opened the door for a two-run double off the bat of Dayan Viciedo.

Poreda has not allowed a run in either of his two wins this season.

This was the first no-hitter of any sort since April 5, 2001 when three Barons pitchers did the job against Tennessee.

The second game of the double-header was postponed. Since the Diamond Jaxx do not visit Regions Park again in 2009, the game will be made up when the Barons visit West Tenn May 16-20.

The Barons travel to Montgomery Tuesday for the first of a five-game series against the Biscuits. Lucas Harrell (2-0, 2.70) was supposed to start game two Monday night, but will be pushed back to Tuesday because of the rain out. He will go opposite Jeremy Hellickson (201, 1.93). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
