Montgomery Biscuits News Release
PEARL, MS - The Biscuits (12-13) used outstanding starting pitching and seven hits combined from Desmond Jennings to sweep a doubleheader from the Mississippi Braves (10-14) on Monday night at Trustmark Park.
(Game One): Three Biscuits' hurlers combined to two-hit the Mississippi Braves in game one as Montgomery claimed a 3-1 victory at Trustmark Park. With the win, Montgomery also earned the series win.
For the ninth consecutive road game, the Biscuits struck first in game one, plating a second inning run off of M-Braves' starter Scott Diamond (1-2). Cesar Suarez got the Biscuits started with a one-out single. Suarez was forced at second by Matt Spring, who advanced to second when Kody Kirkland misplayed a ball from Drew Anderson at third base. Desmond Jennings singled on the infield to load the bases before Diamond walked Brandon Chaves to bring in Spring with the first run of the game.
Montgomery added an earned run off of Diamond to increase their lead in the fourth inning. Again Suarez set the table, singling to right field to start the inning. Spring followed with a broken-bat single to right, pushing Suarez to third base. Anderson then made it 2-0 with a fielder's choice groundout to shortstop Brandon Hicks, scoring Suarez.
Biscuits' starter Ryan Morse turned in five tremendous innings for Montgomery, limiting the M-Braves to just two hits, while striking out two. Morse retired 12 consecutive M-Braves in his outing, spanning from the first inning until the fifth when Kala Ka'aihue homered to left-center field. Morse (2-3) earned his second consecutive win with the performance.
Neal Frontz came on in the sixth inning and worked one perfect inning of relief, striking out one. After the Biscuits plated an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, they summoned Calvin Medlock to close out the ballgame. Medlock responded with another perfect inning, and notched his fifth save, while retiring the side in order.
(Game Two): The Biscuits raced to a 6-1 lead, before holding off a late Mississippi rally to claim game two, 6-5, and in turn sweep the doubleheader at Trustmark Park.
The Biscuits again scored first in game two, plating two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The runs were surrendered by Mississippi starter Kyle Cofield when Jennings led off with a single and advanced to second when Cofield walked Brandon Chaves. The pair stole then pulled off a successful double-steal of second and third. They lingered there as neither Hughes or Hall could advance them before Rashad Eldridge came to the plate and sent an infield single to the right side scoring both to give Montgomery a 2-0 lead.
Montgomery added three runs and chased Cofield in the fifth inning. Anderson led off with a double and was singled home by Jennings. Cofield hit Chaves with a pitch before walking Hughes to load the bases. Hall then sent a fielder's choice bouncer to second base to score Jennings. Eldridge capped the inning with come-backer that collided with Cofield sending him to the ground and bringing in Chaves. Cofield (1-1) was helped from the diamond, his night concluded. He took the loss after conceding five runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Biscuits' starter Jason Cromer allowed just one run over five innings, that run scoring on an RBI single for Willie Cabrera in the third inning. Cromer (2-1) earned the win for Montgomery.
The Biscuits added a run off of reliever Brett Butts to cap their scoring in the sixth inning. The run was driven in by Jennings, who blistered a double down the third base line to score Ian Paxton. The double was the seventh hit of the night for Jennings, who was 4-for-4 in game two.
Mississippi fought back in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring four times and putting the tying run in scoring position before Eddie Morlan finally closed out the 6-5 win by popping out pinch-hitter Greg Creek. Morlan earned his first save of the season in improbable fashion as the Biscuits needed three pitchers to end the ballgame. Ryan Reid had begun the frame and Mike Wlodarczyk also appeared in the inning. The duo was charged with three of the four innings that scored in the inning.
The Biscuits took four of the five games in the series to improve to 7-3 on the road. Montgomery returns home to open a five-game series with Birmingham on Tuesday night at Riverwalk Stadium. RHP Jeremy Hellickson will make the start for Montgomery in game one. Birmingham's starter is yet to be determined after the Barons had the back-end of a doubleheader rained out on Monday.
