Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
KNOXVILLE, TN- All the glitz and glamour of a beauty pageant will come to the Knoxville Civic Coliseum this weekend as the Knoxville Ice Bears hold their first annual "Miss Ice Bear" competition. Thirteen area women, who were selected through a series of weekly contests at Michael's, will battle it out on the ice for over $2000 in cash & prizes and the right to wear the inaugural Miss Ice Bear crown.
The competition will begin on Friday January 17th, as the Ice Bears host the Winston-Salem Parrots. Each contestant will solicit donations throughout the evening in hopes of raising money and awareness for their favorite charity. Then, on Saturday night, January 18th, the full-blown contest will begin with an evening gown competition during the first intermission and the swimsuit portion during the second intermission as the Bears take on the Orlando Seals. An area celebrity panel of judges will judge each contestant and the winner will be announced during the third period.
"Friday is an opportunity for our fans to get to know these ladies as people and not just as beauty objects", said Ice Bears General Manager Tommy Benizio. "Historically, this contest has been a huge success here in Knoxville, and we hope to continue the tradition others have built in the past".
The thirteen finalists and their selected charity for the 2002-2003 Miss Ice Bear competition are: Johnna Martin (Ronald McDonald House), Tanji Cogdell (Childhelp USA), Amanda Price (Knoxville Volunteer Rescue Squad), Ashly Chase (CONTACT of Knoxville), Bridgette Simerly (Inter Faith Health Clinic), Lora Bull (Disability Resource Center), Laura Spiegal (FISH of Knox County), Melissa Tipps (Junior Achievement), Nina DiTommaso (Youth Villages), Chimere Burkett (Love Kitchen), April Goins (Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, TN. Unit), Julia Gardner (Associated Catholic Charities) and Kelli Burgin (Lupus Foundation).
Each contestant is available for interviews and can be arranged by calling Tom Sye at the Ice Bears office at 865-525-PUCK. In addition any media members who would like to be a celebrity judge can secure a spot by also calling Tom Sye at 865-525-PUCK. It's your team Knoxville!
