Springfield Cardinals News Release
Hooks starter Philip Barzilla allowed just one run over five innings as Corpus Christi evened up their three-game series with the Springfield Cardinals, beating the Cards 8-3 on Wednesday night at Hammons Field.
Barzilla (2-3) allowed three consecutive two-out singles in the second inning, as the Cards took a 1-0 lead. Robinson Cancel and Aaron Herr collected back-to-back hits, before Milko Jaramillo's bouncing chopper into right field scored Cancel for a 1-0 advantage.
From there, Barzilla settled down and allowed his offense to score the game's next eight runs.
The Hooks tallied an unearned run against Cards starter Stuart Pomeranz (1-1) in the fourth to tie the contest. Mike Rodriguez earned a two-out walk and moved to third on an error by Juan Diaz. Rodriguez would score to make it 1-1, as Travis Hanson was unable to cleanly field Charlton Jimerson's ground ball.
The Hooks took the lead for good in the fifth, getting another two-out run. Tommy Whiteman singled and then scored on Hector Gimenez' RBI double, making it 2-1. That would be all for Pomeranz (1-1), who allowed just the two runs (one earned) on three hits in five innings.
Corpus added two in the sixth against Jeremy Cook and three more in the seventh against Anthony Rawson, making it 7-1 after seven. One of four Cards' errors contributed to yet another unearned run in the ninth against reliever Oscar Alvarez, making it 8-1.
The Cards got a spark in the ninth, as Pete Zoccolillo extended his hitting streak to six straight since joining Springfield, with a lead-off single to right. Aaron Herr followed one-out later with a two-run shot to left-center field, his tenth homer of the year and third in as many games. Herr is the first Cards player to homer in three straight games this year.
Corpus reliever Fernando Rijo earned his first save of the year, going the final four innings, allowing only the two runs in the ninth inning. Hooks third baseman Tommy Whiteman had two hits, including his first homer of the year, a solo shot in the seventh inning against Anthony Rawson.
Springfield and Corpus Christi face off in the final game of the series on Wednesday night, as Jeremy Cummings (1-2) throws for Springfield against Corpus Christi's Chris Sampson (2-10). Game time from Hammons on Wednesday night is 7:10pm. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
