Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(SPRINGFIELD, MO) - Second baseman Aaron Herr scored two runs and knocked in a pair of runs, and starting pitcher Jordan Pals tossed seven shutout innings as Springfield opened a three-game series Monday with a 7-3 win over the Hooks. Corpus Christi, denied in its bid for a third straight road victory, falls to 2-3 in the half and 29-46 overall.
Herr, who finished the night 3-for-4 with a double and a homer, singled in the second to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Milko Jaramillo followed with a ground ball to short, but Wade Robinson's throw sailed past second baseman Eric Riggs into foul territory along the right field line. Herr and Robinson Cancel both scored on the play to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
Third baseman Travis Hanson made it a 3-0 game when he led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to center. The blast was Hanson's 10th of the season and just the second homer allowed all year by Hooks' spot starter Scott MacRae (2-2).
Corpus Christi failed to put a dent in Pals (4-5), who surrendered just two hits and a walk during his seven innings of work. Pals fanned five and at one point retired 15 consecutive batters.
The Hooks were able to get to the Cardinals' pen, though, in the eighth. Pinch hitter Hector Gimenez was hit by a pitch with two men out and replaced at first by pinch runner Chris Sampson. Josh Anderson walked, and reliever Anthony Ferrari was pulled in favor of Cory Doyne. Tommy Whiteman greeted Doyne with a line drive single to center, chasing Sampson home to bring the Hooks to within two at 3-1.
Mike Rodriguez took a Doyne pitch off the foot, loading the bases for Mark Saccomanno. The Texas League's Player of the Week, who had doubled to lead off the second inning, fanned on a 2-2 pitch from Doyne to leave the bases full at inning's end.
The Cardinals carried the momentum of Doyne's strikeout into the home eighth, scoring four runs on four hits against reliever Monte Mansfield. An RBI single by Juan Diaz re-established Springfield's three-run advantage. Mansfield struck out the next two batters, but then gave up back-to-back homers by Herr and Jaramillo, and the Cards were up 7-1.
Riggs added a homer of his own in the ninth, a blast to right with Charlton Jimerson aboard that got the final score to 7-3. The circuit shot was Riggs' fourth this season and his second at Hammons Field. All four of Riggs' homers have come on the road.
MacRae, who had not yielded a run over his last five outings covering 15.2 innings, was saddled with the loss despite a quality effort. He was charged with three runs, two earned, on six hits and a walk over five frames. MacRae struck out five, equaling his season high. Reliever Jamie Merchant, making his Double-A debut for the Hooks, tossed two innings of shutout ball.
Game two of the series takes place Tuesday night at 7:10. LHP Philip Barzilla (1-3, 3.86) will handle the mound work for Corpus Christi, while RHP Stuart Pomeranz (1-0, 6.75) gets the call for Springfield.
