Collecting only six hits the Calgary Vipers were defeated 7-2 by the Victoria Seals at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Victoria starter Anthony Pluta (6-3) threw six innings for the win while allowing only four hits for two runs and striking out seven. With the loss Calgary drops to two and a half games ahead of the Seals for first place in the North Division at 24-14 with seven games remaining in the season. Overall the Vipers record is 47-34 on the Golden Baseball League season.
One bright spot for the Snakes was Jordan Muir out of the bullpen retiring all five batters he faced on only nine pitches which were all strikes. Mark Michael (2-5) took the loss after giving up five earned runs in five and a third innings.
Calgary opened up the scoring in the first inning when Jonny Kaplan doubled, Jorge Mejia laid down a sacrifice fly, and Brent Metheny collected a run batted in two-bagger for a 1-0 advantage.
Victoria responded in the second as Tim Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and Brian Rios hit a home run for a 2-1 lead.
Caonabo Cosme hit his sixth home run of the year for the Vipers in the fourth frame to tie the game 2-2.
The Seals quickly went back in front at 5-2 in the fifth inning when Colin Moro, Anthony Pluta, and Wilver Perez all singled for a run followed by a base hit from Henry Calderon that drove in one with a second run scoring on a throwing error.
Victoria added a run in the sixth for a 6-2 advantage as Rodriguez singled, stole second base, and after a fielding error scored on a Moro RBI base hit.
In the ninth frame the Seals added an insurance run for a 7-2 lead when Jerry Madueno singled, Joe Sergent laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Calderon collected a RBI base hit.
The Vipers now embark on a season ending road trip starting with three games in Chico against the Outlaws on Tuesday August 31st, Wednesday September 1st, and Thursday September 2nd all at 8:05 PM MDT. Calgary plays the Tijuana Big Horn Sheep in Yuma, Arizona on Friday September 3rd at 8:00 PM MDT, a double-header on Saturday September 4th at 6:30 PM MDT, and Sunday September 5th at 7:00 PM MDT.
