Victoria Seals News Release
Calgary, AB - Hoping to stay alive in the chase for a playoff spot, the Victoria Seals returned to Foothills Stadium for game three against the Calgary Vipers on Saturday evening. Turning to Jino Gonzalez (6-5) for the start, the Seals battled against Dusty Gober (8-1) after splitting the first two games of the set.
Victoria jumped on the board first in the top of the opening inning, using doubles from both Wilver Perez and Terrence McClain to grab a 1-0 advantage. The Vipers took a lead of their own in the bottom of the second, however, when Julio Ramirez hit a lead-off home run to tie the game, before Drew Miller launched a home run of his own and Jonny Kaplan collected an RBI single for a 3-1 lead.
Pulling back within one in the third, the Seals made it 3-2 when Perez singled, and later scored on a groundout from Terrence McClain. Calgary came right back with offense of their own in the fifth inning when Kaplan singled and reached second base on a throwing error before Brent Metheny cashed in a sacrifice fly. Then, after Ramirez and Price both singled, Miller got back into the act with a two-run double for a 6-2 Calgary advantage.
Padding their lead in the seventh, Calgary stretched the lead to 8-2 with the help of a solo bomb courtesy of Metheny along with a Luis Taveras RBI double. Victoria kept pace with two runs of their own in the top of the eighth, using an RBI double from Brian Rios along with a run-scoring fielder's choice off the bat of Colin Moro to pull back within four.
The Vipers put the game away in the bottom of the inning, though, getting a solo blast from Kaplan, three straight singles from Mejia, Ramirez, and Price for another run, and Miller picked up his fifth RBI of the game with a double for a 12-4 final score.
Dusty Gober claimed his ninth win of the campaign with six strong innings on the mound, while Jino Gonzalez fell to .500 with the loss. Julio Ramirez had four hits in the Vipers effort, while Drew Miller posted an excellent performance in game three, posting three hits to return atop the league RBI race.
