Victoria Seals News Release
Calgary, AB - Wrapping up the 16-game season series against the Calgary Vipers, the Victoria Seals returned to Foothills Stadium for game four on Sunday afternoon. Sending Anthony Pluta (5-3) to the mound for the start, the Seals squared off against Mark Michael (2-4) on the hill for the home side.
The Vipers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Jonny Kaplan doubled before Brent Metheny picked up an extra-base hit of his own to give Calgary a 1-0 advantage. The Seals answered with offense of their own in the second when Tim Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to set up a two-run bomb courtesy of Brian Rios to put Victoria ahead by a 2-1 margin.
Caonabo Cosme pulled the Vipers even in the bottom half of the sixth, taking Pluta over the left field fence to tie the game at 2-2. But Victoria restored their lead in the fifth, when Colin Moro, Pluta, and Wilver Perez would all single before scoring with the help of another single from Henry Calderon that drove and a throwing error at home plate to put the Seals up 5-2.
Victoria padded their lead with a run in the sixth with the help of a single from Rodriguez, an error to Calgary shortstop Jorge Mejia and an RBI base hit off the bat of Moro RBI. Rounding out the scoring in the ninth frame, the Seals took a 7-2 lead when Jerry Madueno singled, former Viper Joe Sergent laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Calderon collected his second run-scoring base hit of the game to polish off a game four victory.
Anthony Pluta was strong through six innings on the mound en route to his sixth win of the season, while Mark Michael took the loss for Calgary. Two RBI's from both Brian Rios and Henry Calderon paced the Seals offense, while Brent Metheny was the lone Viper with two hits in a losing effort.
Following a travel day tomorrow, the Seals begin a three-game series against the Edmonton Capitals at Telus Field at 6:00 p.m. (PT) on Tuesday night.
