Plate Patience Pays Off

The Calgary Vipers received 16 free passes at the plate in defeating the St. George RoadRunners 13-2 before 1652 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers batters walked a season high 13 times to go along with 3 hit batsmen on their way to victory. Factoring in 15 hits the Snakes left a staggering 17 men on base in the romp. With the win Calgary's second half record improves to 18-7 and they are 41-27 overall. The Vipers are now up four and a half games in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.

Making his first professional start Daniel Morari (3-0) earned the win with six innings pitched allowing one run and not walking a batter. Out of the bullpen Monte Mansfield and Jordan Muir both recorded one-two-three frames.

At the plate Calgary was led by leadoff man Jonny Kaplan who reached base all six plate appearances going three-for-three with three walks, four runs batted in and two runs scored.

Calgary opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Kaplan walked, Guillermo Reyes doubled, Brent Metheny walked to load the bases, and Kevin Price was hit by pitch for a run batted in and a 1-0 lead.

St. George quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the second as Matt Huggins tripled and scored on a Chris Nastasi RBI groundout.

The Vipers retook the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the frame when Luis Taveras walked, Morari sacrificed bunted, and with two outs Kaplan delivered a RBI single.

In the fourth inning Calgary put up three runs for a 5-1 advantage as Caonabo Cosme walked, Morari put down another sac bunt, Kaplan walked, Reyes singled in one, and Metheny brought two in with a base hit.

The Snakes added to the lead in the sixth when Julio Ramirez walked, Price doubled, Ramirez scored on a wild pitch, Drew Miller was hit by a pitch, Taveras hit a sacrifice fly, Isidro Perez walked, and Kaplan doubled in a run for a 8-1 score.

The RoadRunners got a run back in the seventh as Nastasi and Mike Castellano singled, Dave Liffers walked, and Tim Rotola drove in one with a groundout for a 8-2 game.

Back came Calgary in the bottom of the frame when Jorge Mejia and Price singled, Miller walked to load the bases, Taveras reached on a fielder's choice for a RBI, Cosme hit a sacrifice fly, Perez doubled, and Kaplan drove in two with a single for a 12-2 lead.

One final run was scored in the eighth by the Snakes as Metheny doubled, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Mejia sacrifice fly for a 13-2 score.

This four game series against the St. George RoadRunners in Calgary at Foothills Stadium continues on Sunday August 15th at 12:35 PM MDT with Team Photo Giveaway, and Monday August 16th and Tuesday August 17th with both games starting at 7:05 PM MDT.
