Tucson Toros News Release

Calgary, CAN - The Tucson Toros avoided a sweep by the Calgary Vipers with a thrilling 10-7 victory Friday night. The Toros also snapped their 6 game losing streak with the winning effort.

Tucson jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the first three innings of play including run scoring singles by 1B Cristobal Santana in the 1st inning and by 3B Wally Backman Jr. Also contributing to the Toros' early lead were 2 Calgary errors in the 3rd inning in what would be a 4-run inning.

With the score 6-2 Tucson, the Vipers staged a 4-run inning rally of their own in the 7th that tied the game at 6 apiece after a 2-out bases loaded 2 RBI double by Vipers' Catcher Luis Tavares.

The Vipers overtook the lead in the 8th inning after 2B Kevin Price got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Calgary a 7-6 go advantage.

The Toros, trailing by a run and down to their final 3 outs, came charging back to score 4 runs in the top of the 9th inning as the first 6 Toro batters strung together 6 consecutive hits that included four consecutive RBI singles by Outfielders Ron Perodin, Lino Garcia and Francisco Plasencia as well as by SS Ryan Priddy to give the Toros the 10-7 victory.

The Toros filled the offensive stat sheets with a total of 17 team hits. Seven of the nine players in the starting lineup drive in at least 1 run in the balanced attack and Priddy, Garcia and Santana each finished with 3 hits apiece.

The Toros will start their final road series in Canada Saturday night to kick off a 4-game series against the Edmonton Capitals starting at 6:00 p.m. (Tucson time).
